China's TCL Signs Licensing Agreement With BlackBerry

Chinese home appliances and electronics company TCL has signed a licensing agreement with the Canadian smartphone brand BlackBerry.

This is reportedly the first licensing agreement signed by BlackBerry since the company transformed itself into a software company.

Under the agreement, TCL will build and distribute BlackBerry-branded mobile devices in all countries, except for India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Indonesia. Indonesia is the largest market for BlackBerry and the company signed an agreement with a local company BB Merah Putih in September 2016, allowing the latter to make and sell BlackBerry smartphones in the local market.

BlackBerry said that those devices made by TCL will have the security, apps and customer support provided by BlackBerry.

In September 2016, BlackBerry announced to outsource its smartphone business and the company launched DTEK60, which was OEMed by TCL, after a month.

Financial terms of the TCL and Blackberry deal were not released.
