Power BI Revs Up NASCAR Fantasy Game

May 6, 2018   Self-Service BI
social default image Power BI Revs Up NASCAR Fantasy Game

Microsoft and NASCAR have a history of working together to bring technology to the forefront of the NASCAR business, making the sport safer and significantly increasing its fairness. Another primary goal for NASCAR is to find new ways to increase and enhance fan engagement. This includes sharing the wealth of data NASCAR collects from cars, drivers, tracks and teams with fans, in a new and compelling way. That’s why we’re so excited about our collaboration within the re-launch of NASCAR’s fantasy game.

The new driver comparison tool uses historical data from NASCAR’s robust data warehouse to compare two drivers at all the tracks on this year’s schedule. Now, for the first time, fans can compare the full racing profile of two drivers all in one place. This is just the first step in a greater effort for NASCAR to share race data with fans in a new and exciting way.

NASCAR is no stranger to the impact of Power BI and has been using the technology internally for a couple of years to help its tech team and business decision makers more easily understand the massive amounts of data they collect at each race – from track conditions to red flags – which has helped NASCAR not only to make faster decisions, but also modernize their business and improve operations. “NASCAR, as a whole, generates a mountain of data. The cars have a variety of sensors in them, including the ECU and highly precise GPS positioning. Power BI gives anyone on the NASCAR team easy access to that data, visualized in a way that is quick to digest to help make business decisions,” says Stephen Byrd, Senior Director of Technology Integration and Development at NASCAR.

Like many of the reports we all work on, the main focus when building this tool was simplicity.

We worked with the NASCAR.com team to include as much information as we could in a small 320-pixel wide column on the site. Microsoft Power BI’s open visualization platform was leveraged to create a custom visual that fit the simplicity and size needs of the NASCAR.com team. These unique sizing challenges also allowed us to make use of the new ability to turn off the visual header in reading mode for a report. When this visual header displayed, it blocked important pieces of the report as we packed visuals together, and we didn’t expect users to do many of the actions that currently show in the visual header, such as opening the visual in focus mode or drilling down. This feature was released in the March Feature Update. To learn more, be sure to check out this blog post and the video below by Amanda Cofsky (Program Manager, Power BI Desktop).

Power BI is excited to help empower fans with the same access to data that NASCAR’s internal teams have benefitted from to play the fantasy game and track player performance, and to show off how new capabilities in the tool are benefiting our customers. Check out the game for yourself and comment below with what you think!

Jonathan Adler Extends its ‘Fantasy Factory’ Design Environment to Business

November 22, 2017   NetSuite

Posted by Branden Jenkins, GM of Retail, Oracle NetSuite

Jonathan Adler, has been the authority on Modern American glamour since 1993. Headquartered in New York City’s Soho neighborhood, the office is affectionately referred to as “Fantasy Factory,” a cheeky nod to Warhol’s Factory.

Inside the vibrant and colorful office, Adler and his team design everything from pottery and furniture to textiles, lighting and more. With plenty of dogs running around, the “Fantasy Factory” is designed to bring ideas to life through collaboration, irreverence and creativity.

“If you knock the work out of the park, there’s tremendous opportunity to have a great time and laugh with cool people and do really creative and fun things,” said Chief Technology Officer Damen Seminero, who first joined Jonathan Adler as a consultant over a decade ago. “It’s just an amazing place to work.”

jonathan%20adler Jonathan Adler Extends its ‘Fantasy Factory’ Design Environment to BusinessNow, Jonathan Adler is extending that concept to how he runs the business of the same name. Since deploying NetSuite OneWorld in 2012 Jonathan Adler has gained “insane flexibility” to innovate, optimize and grow in ways not possible before, according to Seminero. Much like how high-end home furnishings are designed, ideas for business optimization are brought to life to improve cost-efficiency, time to market and strategic decision-making.

“NetSuite is our central nervous system and the single data source for our financials, inventory and customers,” Seminero said. “I can’t say enough about the flexibility NetSuite gives us to do virtually anything. I’ve never encountered a situation where I had to say, ‘No, we can’t do that.’”

Flexibility to Innovate and Grow

Previously, Jonathan Adler was throttled by siloed systems. On top of problems with poor visibility and efficiency, the company couldn’t upgrade to newer versions of its software without a massive and costly ordeal.

With NetSuite, Adler has a unified foundation for accounting, inventory management and order processing, key elements in customer-centric retail operations and B2B distribution. NetSuite feeds nightly catalog updates to Jonathan Adler’s ecommerce site, while the Bronto Marketing Platform triggers and delivers timely, personalized communications to customers and fans. With NetSuite OneWorld, Jonathan Adler can also set up new stores within hours, unlike the previous scenario that required weeks of provisioning on-premise software and systems.

Straightforward customizations in NetSuite, an open API and prebuilt connectors to third-party applications have made it easy for the company to engineer new efficiencies and visibility across the business, Seminero said.

“The ability to integrate and interface with NetSuite is just limitless,” Seminero said. “It’s allowed us to grow and add new locations without ever pausing. We hire people with experience on other systems and always hear, ‘NetSuite is simply amazing — we could never do this at our old company.’”

One example: Jonathan Adler wanted to add a new virtual inventory location with its third-party warehousing and distribution partner. The cost would have been over $ 200,000. But with NetSuite, Jonathan Adler found it could simply add a new virtual inventory location and hook it into existing data exchange processes with the partner, at no cost.

NetSuite’s flexibility has also helped fuel Jonathan Adler’s rapid growth. The company increased its number of company-run retail stores from 18 to 26 since going live on NetSuite, including two in the U.K. Wholesale retail partners have also grown from 500 to more than 1,000 across 30 countries, including such top names as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Harrod’s and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Meanwhile, SKU volume has soared from 12,000 to 33,000, and NetSuite OneWorld gives Jonathan Alder seamless global financial consolidation across its U.S. and U.K. subsidiaries, and ability to transact in the British pound and other currencies.

Jonathan Adler has come a long way since the founder’s first sale of hand-crafted pottery to Barneys department store in 1993. But as growth and complexity increased, Jonathan Adler needed an agile, scalable and future-proof platform to continue its upward trajectory.

“NetSuite has made us smarter, faster and more capable,” Seminero said. “We’ve gotten out of NetSuite everything that was promised to us and everything we wanted, which was a lot. I’ve never seen a system that can do what NetSuite can do.”

Stevie Bannon's Fantasy Federalism franchise

February 2, 2017   Humor
 Stevie Bannon's Fantasy Federalism franchise

fantasy sports are considered games of skill – not chance … There are two main types of fantasy football: –Traditional, which is mostly run by amateurs and in which the competition can run either for an entire season or many seasons if it is a keeper league, or –Daily, an accelerated version in which the contests are conducted over shorter periods, such as a week or a single day.

“The standard fantasy football scoring system comprises a well-respected baseline of statistic/point-value pairs designed to promote balance across the various fantasy positions…”

Even after the election is over, Prezident Bannon hasn’t made the auction rules clear to his assistant, Orange scotch fart.

The problem is, “ Fantasy football continues unabated in all of these states, so it appears none of these regulations have any effect.[18]”

C3ftGXGVUAAfGCa Stevie Bannon's Fantasy Federalism franchise Many leagues are composed of friends, family, co-workers and even strangers that are in the fantasy league to prove who is the greatest couch coach. Millions upon millions of dollars are won and lost each year in fantasy league betting. Some leagues are managed by players in the leagues while other leagues are run by independent businesses.[16] The Federal government has determined that fantasy league gambling is not a “game of chance” and as such is not illegal, however, alterations to the rules can cause a fantasy league to skew too far into chance and lose federal protection. At the state level, many states, including Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana and Vermont have banned certain activities related to fantasy football, such as collection of league fees and payout of winnings, when done so online.[17] Florida has an outright ban on all fantasy football, though how the ban is enforced appears to be unclear. Fantasy football continues unabated in all of these states, so it appears none of these regulations have any effect.[18]

Some Fantasy Football leagues wager things other than money, such as the loser of the league has to get a tattoo, and that tattoo has to be of what the winner of the league wants. The only thing that the loser gets any say in is the location of the tattoo. The owners of the teams have to sign a contract before the season to agree to the punishment if they lose.[19] Other high-stakes leagues offer prizes of US$ 250,000 to the ultimate champion.

Stevie Bannon's Fantasy Federalism franchise Fantasy football is a game of skill in which the participants serve as the general managers of virtual professional gridiron football teams. The competitors choose their team rosters by participating in a draft in which all players of a real football league are available. Points are based on the actual performances of the players in real-world competition. The game typically involves the National Football League, Canadian Football League or college football.

There are two main types of fantasy football:

–Traditional, which is mostly run by amateurs and in which the competition can run either for an entire season or many seasons if it is a keeper league, or

–Daily, an accelerated version in which the contests are conducted over shorter periods, such as a week or a single day.

Daily fantasy football is managed by commercial internet companies who charge a percentage of each betting pool. In the US, the two largest of these firms are FanDuel and DraftKings.

Is This the Real Life or is it Just Fantasy? Peeking into Actual Adoption Rates of the IoT

December 9, 2016   Big Data

IoT this, connected devices that. Are companies really delving into the Internet of Things – and if so, how are they going about it? Keep reading for some true insight into IoT adoption, which is based on actual data about real-life IoT trends and challenges for the enterprise.

The IoT has been a hot topic lately. The 2016 holiday season saw vendors like Amazon and Google aggressively promoting a new generation of “smart” devices for the home. The Dyn network outage in October highlighted the new types of security risks that connected devices are posing. These trends helped bring the IoT onto the radar screens of the masses for the first time.

In light of developments like these, you may be tempted to think of the IoT as a revolutionary new type of technology that is rapidly changing the way we compute.

blog truck Is This the Real Life or is it Just Fantasy? Peeking into Actual Adoption Rates of the IoT

The Real State of the IoT

But that’s not quite right. Yes, connected devices are an increasingly important part of the tech market. To gain true perspective on the IoT’s past, present, and future, however, it’s worth keeping the following facts in mind:

  • The IoT is not at all a new idea. The term itself was coined more than a decade ago. Smart devices for the home, like Internet-enabled refrigerators, have been around since the late 1990s.
  • The IoT remains a very broad and vaguely defined concept. It includes smart consumer devices like thermostats and Philips Hue light bulbs. But it also involves remotely controlled traffic lights, sensors that retailers use to monitor inventory and even – believe it or not – bulldozers.
  • The extent to which IoT devices integrate with traditional computing infrastructure, and the ways they connect to it, vary widely. Most smart devices in the home connect to commodity servers using traditional networks and IP addresses – a familiar paradigm. But more obscure protocols, like long range wireless, are also an important part of the IoT, especially in settings where implementing traditional network infrastructure is not feasible.

What facts like these show is that – despite the recent headlines made by certain segments of the IoT market – it’s better to think of the IoT as a relatively traditional computing paradigm that is slowly but steadily evolving. It’s also one that encompasses much more than the smart consumer devices that first come to mind when most people think of the IoT.

IoT Adoption Trends

That the IoT is now as new as many people think does not mean that companies aren’t eager to invest in it. A Gartner study in early 2016 found that 29 percent were already using IoT technology, and another 14 percent planned to invest in it by the end of the year. The overall value of the global IoT market will surpass fourteen trillion dollars by 2022, according to Cisco.

IoT adoption rates and valuations are even higher within certain industries. A summer 2016 survey of retailers and logistics providers reported that 64 percent were already using IoT technology, for instance. Within manufacturing, IoT market size is expected to triple between 2015 and 2020.

IoT Challenges, and How to Overcome Them

It’s clear, then, that there is a lot of interest within the enterprise in investing in the IoT. But the fact that the IoT remains poorly understood shows that companies run the risk of making mistakes because they are not prepared to address all of the challenges posed by moving to the IoT. In order to invest in IoT technology successfully, companies should be prepared for the following:

  • Integrating data from diverse sources. 69 percent of CIOs report data integration as the biggest challenge they face in implementing industrial IoT technology. This is no surprise, given the fact that IoT devices and networks vary so widely. To solve this data integration challenge, organizations need tools that can aggregate information from a variety of sources.
  • Making sense of IoT data. The more devices and networks you have on the IoT, the harder it becomes to assure that the data they produce is actionable. To meet this challenge, enterprises have to deploy data analytics solutions that can interpret information in diverse forms.
  • Integrating IoT devices with legacy infrastructure. As noted above, not all IoT devices can simply connect to commodity servers using the standard Internet protocol. Enterprises that want to make the most of IoT connectivity need solutions that can facilitate connectivity and data exchange between new types of devices on the IoT and the old infrastructure that companies already have in place, like mainframes. Enterprises should not expect to rebuild their infrastructures from scratch just to make them IoT-friendly.
  • Securing IoT data. The expansion of the IoT is breeding a whole new generation of security risks. By compromising IoT devices, attackers can wreak real havoc on critical infrastructure. This makes securing IoT data – both on IoT devices themselves and on the servers that help to store and analyze that data – absolutely essential.

Fortunately, tools to help enterprises overcome the challenges to IoT adoption are already here. These include Syncsort’s collection of solutions for easing data storage and data analytics on infrastructure composed of diverse devices and networks.

Will Smith To Reteam With ‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer For Fantasy Cop Thriller!

March 8, 2016   Humor

Will Smith will reteam with his “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer, to tackle a new project titled “Bright,” which Joel Edgerton is also attached to co-star in, with Max Landis penning the script.

Full details on “Bright” are still underwraps at the moment, other than a description of the film as a futuristic cop thriller with fantastical elements, set in a world where Orcs and fairies live among humans. I can’t help but think of another Will Smith interracial buddy-action-adventure movie with fantastical elements – namely, the “Men in Black” franchise of movies.

The project is not yet set up at any studio, although given who is attached, it likely won’t be long before it finds a home.

Will Smith is currently filming “Collateral Beauty” just kicked off principal photography. The New Line Cinema and Village Roadshow Pictures project sees Smith leading an all-star cast that includes Edward Norton, Keira Knightley, Michael Peña, Naomie Harris, Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren and Jacob Latimore. The film has been slated for release on December 16, 2016, and is on my list of potential 2017 Oscar contenders, for individual performances and the overall film itself.

Deadline was first to report the news on “Bright.”

With Microsoft Dynamics CRM’s new Fantasy Sales Team’s competition module, managers can keep their sales teams motivated like never before! Sure, we’re all used to sales incentive programs and contests within our organizations, but rather than only reward the same top selling performers, CRM’s Fantasy platform makes it easy to keep everyone motivated and involved.

Users have the ability to “draft” teams within their organization and collaborate with their team members to compete within their chosen “sport”. Anyone can see the results, making participants even more inspired to drive your company toward success. This new CRM feature eliminates the me first, cut throat mentality that many salespeople have in competitions because you have to work with your team! That way, everyone benefits and even the weaker members can still feel useful. Games can last as short as one week or as long as one year, and because this platform is entirely team driven, sales people won’t lose motivation if they start to fall behind the usual leaders. Microsoft gives real time feedback to support productivity. If something isn’t working, team members will be able to make adjustments instantly to guide them to their goal. Here are some of the features that Microsoft CRM’s Fantasy Sales Team offers:

  • Include everyone in the fantasy draft – Don’t just limit the fun to your sales reps!
  • Assign point values to common tasks in and out of Microsoft Dynamics CRM
