Rumor Mill: A.J. & Free To Return To BET To Host ‘106 After Dark’!

Either A.J. Calloway and Free Wright are two amazing April Fool’s pranksters, or they’re really returning to 106 & Park.

According to A.J.’s Instagram, the OGs of the top ten music video show will return to BET to host a new program. The Extra correspondent tagged Free and she reposted, “We’re back.” He then paid his thank yous to the show’s creator, Stephen Hill.

The pair hosted the original 106 from September 11, 2000 to July 28, 2005, with DJ Enuff as the first official disc jockey counting down the hottest hip-hop and R&B as voted on by viewers. Some of our favorite stars today were regulars on the show, stopping by to share their new music and movies with fans.

Chris Rock’s Return As Host Draws 34M Viewers In 8-Year Low- Was The Boycott To Blame?

The Oscars were all given out last night at the 88th Academy Awards but despite one of the most anticipated opening monologues in years due to the diversity controversy,  it turns out there is no gold, nor silver or bronze for ABC. With 34.3 million total viewers watching the Chris Rock hosted shindig from the Hollywood and Highland on Sunday, the Oscars took a tumble this year to hit an 8-year low and the third lowest viewership ever.

Chris Rock’s Return As Host Draws 34M Viewers In 8 Year Low Was The Boycott To Blame? With wins by Spotlight, Brie Larson, a long waiting Leonardo DiCaprio and Alejandro G. Iñárritu, last night’s results are down 8% and 5% respectively in total viewership and the key demo from last year’s Neil Patrick Harris hosted show. Among adults 18-49 last night’s 8:30 – 11:51 PM ET Oscars got a 10.4 rating – another multi-year low. Now, if last year’s increase of 700,000 total viewers in the very final numbers, are any indication, things could go up for the Oscars in the next couple of days but likely not enough to break that 8-year low mark.

In the end, the 2015 Academy Awards delivered 37.3 million total viewers and an 11.0/26 rating in the key demo. Bak then, that was the lowest performance among adults 18-49 since 2008 and the lowest viewership since 2009. Having said that, the 2016 Oscars did not fall as much year-to-year as the 2015 Oscars did. 2015 was down 16% among the 18-49s and 14% in total viewership from the Ellen DeGeneres hosted 2014 show – which, with 43.74 million watching, had the best total audience results since 2000. Looking at the biggest movies to win Best Picture this century, blockbuster Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King won in 2004. That year, the awards had 43.53 million viewers – not quite 200o’s 46.33 million but very close behind 2014 when crowd pleaser Argo won.

Like an echo from another era, last night was in far different place than the last time Rock hosted the Oscars just over a decade ago. The 2005 Rock hosted Oscars pulled in 42.14 million viewers with 19.6 million in the demo – the show has surpassed that number only once, in 2014, since then.

Even with the ratings decline, last night’s Oscars was far from the worst the ceremony has done this century or ever – that Oscar goes to the February 24, 2008 Academy Awards, which drew just over 32 million viewers. Take a look here at the Oscar viewership this century for greater context:

2016 34.3 million Spotlight Host Chris Rock
2015 37.3 million Birdman Host Neil Patrick Harris
2014 43.7 million 12 Years A Slave Host Ellen DeGeneres
2013 40.3 million Argo Host Seth MacFarlane
2012 39.3 million The Artist Host Billy Crystal
2011 37.9 million The King’s Speech Hosts Anne Hathaway/James Franco
2010 41.3 million The Hurt Locker Hosts Steve Martin/Alec Baldwin
2009 36.3 million Slumdog Millionaire Host Hugh Jackman
2008 32.0 million No Country For Old Men Host Jon Stewart
2007 40. 2 million The Departed Host Ellen DeGeneres
2006 38.9 million Crash Host Jon Stewart
2005 42.1 million Million Dollar Baby Host: Chris Rock
2004 43.5 million Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King Host Billy Crystal
2003 33.0 million Chicago Host Steve Martin
2002 41.8 million A Beautiful Mind Host Whoopi Goldberg
2001 42.9 million Gladiator Host Steve Martin

The near decade slide for the Oscars were made pretty clear earlier today when the metered market numbers came out around 6 AM PT.  With a 23.1/37 in metered market results was down 6% from the 24.6/39 that the ceremony got last year in early results from the 56 markets across the country. Like the viewership numbers that’s also an 8-year Oscar low.

The 2015 Neil Patrick Harris-hosted Oscars were matched with the 2011 Oscars for the third worst the Academy Awards has done in MM ratings since the last time Rock fronted the gig in 2005 – only 2009’s Hugh Jackman-hosted 23.3 and 2008’s Jon Stewart-hosted 21.9 were lower. Obviously, in the early results, last night’s show dipped below 2009 and close to 2008 numbers.

The 2005 Oscars were the best the show has done in the past decade with a 30.1/43 MM rating. That high has also remained true in later numbers for the show. WithMillion Dollar Baby winning Best Picture, the 2005 Oscars ended up with a massive 42.14 million viewers and 19.6 million among adults 18-49. In both categories, that was a dip from 2004’s results. Compared to the last time Rock hosted 11-years ago, last night’s 8:30 – midnight show was down 23% in metered market results – much more than a dip.

In local people meters, last night’s Rock-hosted show averaged a 13.5/7 among adults 18-49 according to Nielsen. That’s a 3% slip from the LPM markets for the 2015 Oscars.

Tony Rock To Host Russell Simmons’ ‘All Def Movie Awards’!

Russell Simmons’ All Def Digital (ADD) network has announced the first-ever All Def Movie Awards, which will take place just days before the Oscars, at the World Famous TCL Chinese 6 Theatres. The live event will be held on February 24 and hosted by Tony Rock – as in Chris Rock’s brother; the same Chris Rock who is hosting the Oscars.

Awards will be recognized by members of the All Def Academy, who today announced the following films will compete for Best Picture of 2015:

– “Beasts of No Nation”
– “Chi-Raq”
– “Concussion”
– “Creed”
– “Dope”
– “Straight Outta Compton”

Members of the public can vote for two categories in the All Def Movie Awards (Best Picture and Most Quoted Movie) online  at http://bit.ly/AllDefMA, through midnight on February 23rd.

Other awards will honor Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director as well as Best Bad Muh F**ka and other often overlooked categories, such as Best Helpful White Person and Best Black Survivor in a Movie.

The All Def Movie Awards, which will be held just yards from the Academy Awards stage, will feature a Black Carpet for celebrity presenters, arrivals and VIP guests. The show will also feature a special live musical performance, and a consistent stream of video content before, during and after the show on all of ADD’s social channels, including Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat and Periscope.

“If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself,” said Tony Rock. “With that in mind I have teamed up… with ADD to bring you the ‘All inclusive’, All Def Movie Awards. We’ll honor the entire movie making process. Great acting, mediocre acting as well as horrible acting. Soundtracks. Wardrobes. Maybe even craft services (the best part of the set). This is the award show Hollywood has been waiting for.”

Added Russell Simmons, founder and chairman of All Def Digital, “I don’t expect a 90 year-old Academy member to see ‘Straight Outta Compton’ or vote for it. I’m more concerned that in 2016 there continues to be a stunning lack of diversity in the studios, in the green light process, in the decisions of what films and television series get made, and what actors get chosen. This needs to be addressed institutionally. The All Def Movie Awards are not the Black Oscars, but they could be. This will be a fun, entertaining and hopefully thought provoking celebration of the uncelebrated.”

The All Def Movie Awards will be programmed as part of  All Def Comedy Live, a live weekly comedy showcase. HBO is currently developing a series around the weekly event, which routinely draws celebrities and the best new, emerging and established artists working America’s comedy stages.

Admission is by invitation only, but a select number of seats will be reserved for fans by lottery.

All Def Digital (ADD) is a multi-platform media company for millennials focusing on urban youth culture through premium video programming across comedy, music, lifestyle and topical and timely social commentary.

Tracy Morgan Makes Triumphant Return To TV As Host For Saturday Night Live!

Tracy Morgan made his triumphant return to television as the host for Saturday Night Live. Tracy, who suffered critical injuries in a car crash a year ago, made light of the situation several times throughout his monologue.

“People were wondering, can he speak? Does he have 100% mental compacity? But the truth is I never did,” Morgan jokes. “I might actually be a few points higher now.”

After his monologue, he was greeted by his former 30 Rock co-stars Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer who pretended to be a part of a scene from a 2012 episode of the former award-winning comedy.

“I just want to say one last thing, Tracy, from the heart and this part is no joke. We’re so happy that you’re okay and we’re happier that you’re ready to make people laugh again,” Fey said as her “30 Rock” character Liz Lemon.

LL Cool J To Host Live ‘Lip Sync Battle’ In NYC’s Central Park!

New York City better be ready for the live show of one of the episode of “Lip Sync Battle” that will be happening on July 13 at NYC’s Central Park. The live show is said to be in line with the celebration of the City Parks Foundation’s Summer Stage Festival.

“Lip Sync Battle,” a show airing on Spike TV and hosted by New Yorker LL Cool J will be at the event alongside resident Chrissy Teigen helping him out during the show as she provides commentary about the competing artists, Broadway World reports.

Executive producer of the show, Casey Patterson, said in a statement that the “Lip Sync Battle” was actually born and raised in NYC to they are honored to do the first-ever live show in Central Park. He added that the event will be free for their fans and it will be an “incredible music legacy” that people should watch out for, Entertainment Weekly shares.

The “Lip Sync Battle” stemmed from “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” as it was just a segment of the NBC show.  However, it has become so popular as it featured a lot of artists battling it out by lip syncing different songs. When it was still just a segment from Fallon’s show, Fallon battled with artists such as Emma Stone, Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart.

The series that has been a spinoff by Spike has then become a regular and most-watched original series that it has been renewed for a second season. It was announced earlier this year that the show has an average of three million viewers per episode. Actors and actresses who have showed their lip-syncing talents are Anna Kendrick, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and many more.

It has not been announced yet who will be the featured celebrities who will pit against each other during the Central Park Live show of “Lip Sync Battle.”

The show airs on Thursdays at 10 P.M. on Spike. The event in Central Park will be taking place on July 13 and the gates will be open to the public at 7 in the evening.
