Why Managers Need To Focus On Employee Happiness

February 12, 2015   BI News and Info

employee waves love flag e1423629033103 Why Managers Need To Focus On Employee HappinessHappy employees are more productive. If an employee is happy, they’ll be more likely to be engaged, and go above and beyond to perform well.

Unfortunately, few managers make the link between an employee’s happiness, and their willingness to do great work. Instead, managers focus on results and look at the amount of work completed or time spent working.

If managers were smart, they would focus on employee happiness, and allow employees to naturally come up with great ideas and provide great service.

Even without looking at any data, it makes sense that if you’re happier, you’ll be more productive because you’ll enjoy what you’re doing more.

But this has now been proven by research.

In March 2014, a group of U.K. researchers conducted a study to try and find the link between happiness and productivity: Happier people are about 12% more productive, the study found.

How managers can make their employees happy

There are a few simple things that managers can do to make their employees happier, and the main keyword is respect.

Have you ever heard of the Hawthorne effect? It’s the increase in productivity in the workplace when people feel that they are cared about.

Show employees that you genuinely care about them and their personal growth. You can measure employee happiness using surveys, and find out what really matters to them.

Once you find out what their true passions are, you can start to help them develop it.

Continuous learning is incredibly important to employees, and focuses on their intrinsic motivation, which is likely to make them happier long term. Things like classes online, mentorship programs, or fun activities like hackathons can be great ways to keep employees happy.

Use the net promoter score

The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is the simplest way to measure employee happiness, because it’s one simple question.

The NPS is originally a customer service tool.

The way it works, is you ask a customer a simple question: “On a scale from 1-10, how likely are you to recommend our product/service to a friend?”

Scores 6 or lower are known as detractors, 6-8 are known as neutral, and 8-10 are known as promoters.

To get your score, you take the number of promoters, minus the number of detractors, and divide by the total number of answers.

In product management, it’s the best way to know if your product is actually good, because the theory is, if someone is willing to recommend your product to a friend, then they actually like it.

Instead of using it for customer service, use it to gauge how employees really feel about your company.

Work on your own happiness

I don’t think it’s realistic to expect managers to increase your happiness for you, and be responsible for doing that.

You should take happiness into your own hands, and do simple things that will make you happier, regardless of what your manager does.

Here are a few things that have been proven to make you happier.

  1. Exercise – It’s been proven scientifically that exercising will make you happier. If you can, exercise in the middle of the day to get that extra boost of energy for the afternoon.
  1. Get rest – Lack of sleep can put you in a pretty bad mood, and sleep has been proven to make you happier. It’s not necessarily about the number of hours you sleep, but more about your habits.
  1. Help others – Helping others, like your coworkers, is a proven way to become happier and to feel less pressured at work.
  1. Meditate – According to the research, regular meditation can actually rewire your brain to become happier. Look into the app called Headspace, it’s my favorite app out there (besides Officevibe of course).

What do you do to increase employee’s happiness?

Any tips you can share about how you increase your employee’s happiness? Let me know on Twitter @JacobShriar or @Officevibe.

Here are the Five Metrics That Will Kickstart Your Sagging B2B Sales

February 12, 2015   Salesforce

Depending on your price point, business-to-business (B2B) sales cycles can be long. And sure, it probably will take your reps longer to sell a marketing automation system than a TV — much more is at stake. But I can say with almost 100% certainty that your sales cycles are longer than they need to be.

In my experience, the number one reason that sales cycles are overly long is because managers lack insight into where deals are getting stuck. In fact, according to Marketing Sherpa,  68% of B2B organizations have not identified their funnel. But tracking the right pipeline metrics enables you to gain a clear view of where deals are getting stuck.

Sales Acceleration Here are the Five Metrics That Will Kickstart Your Sagging B2B SalesI’m recommending five metrics that B2B companies should be tracking, as well as offer some actionable advice about how to leverage these metrics to unclog your sales funnel. By tracking these metrics in Salesforce, you can help your team close deals faster than ever this year.

Time to First Contact

What this metric tracks: How long it takes a rep to reach out to a lead.

How it can shorten your sales cycle: Whether your reps are tasked to follow up with inbound leads from marketing campaigns, or are powering through lists of leads, it’s important to know how long it’s taking reps to reach out to leads. The longer reps wait to reach out to new leads the longer it will take your team to close deals. It pays to ensure that leads are being contacted early and often.

Outbound Dials to Accepted Opportunities

What this metric tracks: The percentage of outbound dials that actually result in sales-qualified opportunities.

How it can shorten your sales cycle: I encounter a lot of companies that are tracking the number of outbound dials that their sales development reps are making each day. Sure, it’s important to track activity metrics like dials. But at the end of the day, I’m more concerned with how many qualified opportunities reps are sourcing. If an SDR is making a lot of dials but not sourcing a lot of opportunities, it could mean that they’re just not not selling efficiently. Perhaps they’re not following up enough times. Maybe they’re dialing leads at the wrong times. Perhaps their pitch just needs more work. Either way, this metric can help you quickly identify which SDRs are propelling leads through your funnel and which aren’t.

Opportunity Win Percentage by Rep

What this metric tracks: The percentage of opportunities that turn into deals.

How it can shorten your sales cycle: This is a great metric because it allows you to identify two important things. First, it lets you see which of your account executives (quota-carrying closers) are best at winning deals. Secondly, it lets you see which SDRs are sourcing opportunities that actually turn into deals. Obviously if you have account executives that aren’t closing enough deals it can be a huge indicator of a problem. But it’s just as important to ensure that your account executives have quality opportunities to work. If an SDR is creating a lot of opportunities that don’t turn into deals it could indicate that the SDR needs some guidance into how to better qualify leads. Clearly, some deals are going to take less effort and time to close than others. It’s important to ensure that SDRs aren’t clogging your pipeline with leads that are going to offer good ROI.

banner sales metrics Here are the Five Metrics That Will Kickstart Your Sagging B2B Sales

Percentage of Deals Without Competitors

What this metric tracks: The percentage of deals in which prospects aren’t actively looking at competitors.

How it can shorten your sales cycle: Generally speaking, competitive deals are harder to close than deals without a competitor. You have to spend time discussing ways that you exceed the competition. And you often have to wait for prospects to finish a trial or pilot program with competitors. So if a high percentage of your deals are competitive, then it could be clogging up your sales funnel. So it tends to be a good idea to keep this percentage as low as possible. One of the best ways to lower your percentage of deals without competitors is by being “first in.” In one of our recent eBooks, sales expert Craig Elias shared some data that being the first vendor into an opportunity raises your odds of winning a deal to 74%! Simply getting to a prospect before they’ve had time to research your competitors is probably the best way to gain an increase in those valuable non-competitive deals.

Won Deals by Campaign

What this metric tracks: This metric tracks which marketing campaigns drive the highest percentage of leads that turn into customers.

How it can shorten your sales cycle: Some campaigns are going to generate more sales-ready leads than others. The last thing you want is Marketing investing in campaigns that generate unqualified leads that either don’t close or take forever to close. This metric is so important because it helps Sales and Marketing get on the same page. by knowing which campaigns deliver the most won deals, sales managers can work to ensure that marketing invests more in efforts that are proven to not only drive calls, but actually generate revenue.

IBM adds cloud analytics platform for utilities; de-anonymizing data

February 12, 2015   BI News and Info

IBM last week announced a new cloud analytics platform with a set of tools aimed at energy and utility companies, offering functionality designed to enable them to track and analyze things like energy production and distribution in an effort to improve business decision making. Also in this news recap: The anonymized data sets used for research purposes aren’t so anonymous after all, according to a study by a team of researchers at MIT.

IBM powers up cloud analytics for energy industry

IBM’s new Insights Foundation for Energy product offering is delivered on its SoftLayer cloud platform and packages together data integration, advanced analytics and data visualization tools. IBM said in a press release that the cloud-based platform is intended to lower the financial barriers that are holding back some energy producers and utilities from becoming more data-driven.

As part of the package, users get a suite of built-in analytics tools, including ones to help them manage predictive maintenance projects and assess system-wide risks in real time, IBM said.

Interest is growing in smart grid technology and new analytics capabilities that can aid utilities in better managing their power generation, transmission and distribution assets. Proponents say that by analyzing how energy is produced and delivered, and using data to improve equipment maintenance, utility companies can improve efficiency and reduce costs.

The IBM rollout comes at the leading edge of what could be a growing cloud analytics trend. Last year, several major analytics vendors announced new cloud-based products, and analysts are increasingly saying that the cloud is becoming a mature option for delivering analytics.

Study: Anonymized data sets aren’t so anonymous

The cornerstone of much analytical research, especially medical and scientific studies, is the anonymized data set. And as corporations have begun basing more of their operational decisions, like marketing campaigns, on data, trading anonymized user data sets has become a big business.

But these data sets aren’t as anonymous as promised. A new study published in the journal Science, conducted by a team of MIT researchers that included Alex Pentland, shows that it often is a simple matter to restore identifiers to previously deidentified data sets.

First, the team of researchers obtained an anonymized set of credit card data. They said that they then were able to identify unique buying patterns, even when usernames and account numbers were absent. From that information, they were able to tie purchases back to specific individuals.

The study was published a week after a user of the website Reddit said he had used an anonymized data set of information on New York cabbies to identify drivers who might be devout Muslims, based on their driving activity around that religion’s daily prayer times.

The authors of the Science study wrote that their findings show a need to rethink how potentially sensitive private data is handled.

There has been a lot of talk about measles in the past few weeks, with a significant outbreak at Disneyland in California and a handful of prominent politicians weighing in on whether vaccinations against the disease should be mandated. This prompted the World Health Organization to look at vaccination rates around the world. Check out the WHO’s data visualization to see where different nations stood on measles vaccination rates between 1980 and 2013.

NetVibes evolves to become your dashboard and connector for the Internet of Things

February 12, 2015   Big Data
Mobile executive? VB is hosting our 5th annual Mobile Summit on February 23–24 at the scenic Cavallo Point Resort in Sausalito, CA. See if you qualify here.

NetVibes has come a long way. In a world where business leaders, entrepreneurs, and developers shout the word “pivot” at a moment’s notice, NetVibes has stuck to its original plan throughout its (relatively, in Internet terms) long history.

And today, NetVibes has announced that its web tool is going to push that original intention further by becoming your dashboard for the Internet of Things (IoT).

logo placeholder NetVibes evolves to become your dashboard and connector for the Internet of Things

NetVibes was created ten years ago by Tariq Krim and developer Florent Frémont. At that time, he was a rare European success in the global Web 2.0 scene, having created a music blog that was getting more readers than his previous employers, the French newspaper La Tribune. He wanted a simple way to monitor his 17 blogs, and the idea of NetVibes was born.

It turns out that other people wanted exactly the same thing. In an interview with The Guardian back in 2006, he said, “[O]n the first day we had 15,000 users.”

At the Future of Web Apps conference in London in February 2007, Krim claimed the platform had ten million active users, one-third of whom spent at least an hour per day on the platform. He also claimed that ten percent had NetVibes open the entire day. I was one of the ten percent.

In reality, it was nothing more than a progression of the “portals” we all used back in the early days of the World Wide Web, but the design and simplicity won over many an Internet user. NetVibes also managed to give every source an equal footing; your friend James’ blog looked exactly the same as The Toronto Star.

As the platform progressed, so did the capabilities. First came support for widgets. Then NetVibes created community elements that allowed users to share their dashboards with others. As the solution moved forward, it started to become more of an all-round analytics dashboard than the web portal of old. The more NetVibes evolved, the more it became a marketing and business analytics tool.

Since May 2008, Freddy Mini has been the CEO of Netvibes — Krim moved on to create Jolicloud. In February 2012, Dassault Systèmes announced the acquisition of Netvibes for an undisclosed amount.

The progression of NetVibes from homepage to dashboard to incorporating IoT is a natural one, to Mini.

We’re studying social media management tools (SMM)…
Add your voice and we’ll share the data with you.

“The first step in Netvibes’ evolution was listening — bringing together all your data from across the Internet,” Mini told me via email. “We then introduced social media and company analytics to enable drag-to-compare charts and visualization, so users can ask any question and learn from all their data. Users could then choose to act, based on the intelligence provided by the dashboard.”

The NetVibes platform now includes a raft of tools. The dashboard still exists, of course, and now includes an RSS reader, which has allowed the platform to expand its user base further since the death of iGoogle and Google Reader.

For business users, NetVibes also includes social analytics, which allows enterprises to get a view of the news, social media, enterprise data, and company reports in one place. For agencies, it provides a dashboard to allow reputation management and stay on top of everything the client has an opinion on, as well as promoting or engaging with events. Its MisoData tool lets you import Excel and CSV files to chart and analyze. You might consider NetVibes the ancestor of other, similar dashboarding tools, such as Cyfe and Geckoboard.

Today, NetVibes has continued its evolution by announcing its intentions to become the dashboard for the Internet of Things (IoT), and in turn is adding the likes of IFTTT and Zapier to its competitive landscape.

Calling its latest iteration the “Dashboard of Things” (DoT), NetVibes is starting with a limited number of hardware integrations, along with social interactions such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

“Netvibes is the definition of your internet on a topic. You aggregate, understand, and now can program your Internet — the Internet you’ve defined in your dashboard,” Mini said. “With DoT, users can now automate actions based on smart insights from the dashboard.”

logo placeholder NetVibes evolves to become your dashboard and connector for the Internet of Things

NetVibes 2015 DoT wizard1 NetVibes evolves to become your dashboard and connector for the Internet of Things

In addition to dashboarding the data from connected devices and wearables, NetVibes now offers a Potions app that allows the user to create “if this, then that, or else do this” automations. Users can choose from pre-made Potions (shared by Netvibes or, soon, the community), or they can create a new Potion from scratch by selecting the ingredients.

For example, a user might weigh themselves on their Internet-connected smart scale, announcing publicly on Twitter if their weight is within a target range. Otherwise, they might have NetVibes email them to keep trying. An agency user might have the platform automatically share client news and content to social networks as it becomes available.

While the initial launch of NetVibes’ DoT includes many established software and web tools integrations, it has a plan to increase hardware and wearable integrations at pace.

NetVibes 2015 DoT wizard2 NetVibes evolves to become your dashboard and connector for the Internet of Things

“Netvibes views connected devices as a third, new type of ‘things’ in addition to content and people,” Mini said. “To make this world of things totally programmable, we’ve developed a new language — Netvibes [Programming] Language (NPL) — which we’ll make available to everyone in order to create triggers and actions on everything.”

So unlike its new competitors, you won’t have to wait until the web tool vendor decides to add an integration to your favorite wearable or hardware accessory.

NetVibes’ DoT platform is available immediately upon request as a private technology preview, and general availability is expected later in Q1 2015. The technology preview features the Withings smart scale, and support for many more devices is planned.

“Today Netvibes ecosystem has 260,000 apps. We plan on doing the same with all kind of ‘things'; content, people, and connected objects,” Mini said.

4 Trends That Will Shape IT App Dev

February 12, 2015   Salesforce

4 Trends That Will Shape IT App Dev

Technology is changing everything about how organisations do business today, from the front office interface with the customer, to back office systems and to supply chain partner relationships. Nothing is immune from this all pervasive revolution.

At the core of this revolution are the applications. In the US, for instance, comScore found that the growth in mobile app usage between June 2013 and June 2014 was as much as 52 per cent.

With an ever demanding user base, IT departments are under increasing pressure to keep launching and improving mobile apps that keep customers and employees alike engaged. There is a huge opportunity to connect with customers through mobile, even with simple point-and-click apps. This new eBook – 4 Tech Trends That Will Shape IT App Dev in 2015 – examines the key trends that drive innovation in the marketplace so app developers can keep pace with that change. This is how the eBook is structured:

1. Demand

With a smartphone in the hand of almost every Australian, the way we operate is changing rapidly. Every user expects to do business with companies using a device in the palm of their hand; while employees equally expect to be able to do their work while on the move. “There must be an app for that” is a phrase we use for every operation or transaction and so the opportunity for disruption is massive.

2. Constant Iteration

Mobile apps must be on a constant feedback loop and iterating daily and weekly, not annually. There is no such thing as an app that is perfect and finished. It must adapt and evolve on a permanent basis. You will notice this from the best apps we use everyday such as Facebook, Pandora, eBay and so on. Ever changing, ever improving.

3. Democratization

Today everyone can be an app developer! The latest generation of platform-as-a-service (PaaS) tools provide business users who might not have sophisticated coding skills with the ability to develop apps quickly and easily – mobile and social from the outset. These apps can be developed in any language and for any device without a great deal of know-how – creating a new app can be easy as working in Exel!

4.  Actionable Data

Vast amounts of data powers everything we do. Massive amounts of data can be quickly and easily made available to users through mobile apps; while at the same time those same apps can glean even more data from consumers that organisations can learn from to improve their systems, products and services. Real-time data is possible and it is this real-time immediacy that users expect – both inside the organisation as well as on the outside.

Download the eBook!

4 Tech Trends That Will Shape IT App Dev in 2015 looks into these four dynamics in much more detail to help you understand how app development will evolve in the next twelve months. But at its core, this eBook provides the secret to that burning question: what is the secret formula to innovation in the enterprise. Why not download it now?
