Ohio GOP wants to declare a 14 June state holiday because it’s ‘Trump’s Birthday’

January 31, 2021   Humor
Ohio GOP wants to declare a 14 June state holiday because its Trumps Birthday

“California celebrates February 6, President Ronald Reagan’s birthday, in its public schools with “exercises remembering the life of Ronald Reagan, recognizing his accomplishments, and familiarizing pupils with the contributions he made to California.”

And he’s not even dead yet, or even a son of Ohio, but there remains Trumpist delusions. Then again shouldn’t James Buchanan get his national holiday on 23 April.

Republican Reps. Jon Cross of Kenton and Reggie Stoltzfus of Paris Township sent an email to their House colleagues Friday asking them to cosponsor an upcoming bill “to celebrate one of the greatest presidents in American history.”

[…]

Ohio House Democrats think June 14 is the wrong day.

Yes, it’s the former president’s birthday, but it’s also a national holiday: Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the American flag on June 14, 1777.

“I don’t like the idea of changing an existing federal holiday that honors the flag,” Rep. Jeff Crossman, D-Parma, said. “I think it’s disrespectful. “

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service – Overview and Industry Focus

January 31, 2021   Microsoft Dynamics CRM

You may not be aware, but Microsoft Dynamics 365 has been a strong competitor in the field service management space for several years now.

The Field Service Management software platform provides full work order management including:

  • Full visibility to a customer’s service history including case and work order management
  • Asset management to track configuration history and work completed on a specific asset
  • Service, warranty and maintenance contracts including SLA management
  • Tracking customer identified issues, automatically creating maintenance tickets, or integrating IoT alerts to proactively manage work orders from all areas of your business
  • Automated processes for dispatching and service scheduling including easy drag and drop scheduling boards
  • Mobile access to process work order through the mobile app including scanning of bar codes, pictures, inventory management, expense and time management

A key strength of the Field Service Management application is the flexible platform for custom processes to be incorporated into the system.  This flexibility, along with strong customer references and sales execution, has led Gartner to identify Microsoft as a Leader in its most recent Magic Quadrant for Field Service management.  Gartner estimates 400,000 Microsoft Field Service Management users in North America alone.  Customer industries are diverse, including energy, manufacturing, telecom, public sector, insurance and high-tech industries.

Source: Gartner (June 2020)

Crowe has implemented Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service in several different industries including a:

  • High Tech company needing to better schedule and dispatch technicians to buildings in order to fix and maintain security systems. With building and other access issues being a high priority, streamlining the processes to provide faster dispatch was a key process improvement focus.  Providing mobile entry of work orders with integration of completed work order to their billing systems streamlined processes and reduced the end-to-end process for completing a work order by multiple days.
  • Telecom provider needing to simplify and automate complex routing rules and escalation of customer issues and troubles to field technicians. Scope of work orders also includes automated scheduling boards and work order dispatch.  Mobile access to plant, tower and customer information allows technicians to complete tickets without needing to call back in for additional information.  Mobile completion of work orders streamlines the process and allows for automation of handoffs, eliminating addition phone calls and missed handoffs from group to group.
  • Metals Industry machine builder with multiple types of machines with warranty and service contracts. When a machine that is critical to your customer goes down, getting it fixed fast and accurately the first time is important.  This machine builder schedules issues as well as preventive maintenance through the automated scheduling boards.  Mobile access to the contract and the machine/asset information provides a history for the technician to work from while on site.  The mobile app allows for inventory and time capture to ensure proper billing, including using the camera to capture pictures.  Automated routing and integration of the work orders to billing reduces days out of the processing and closing of work orders.

Microsoft + Crowe: Proven technology, specialized for your industry.

If you are like these companies and are looking to automate your work order processes, provide better scheduling, and provide mobile applications for your field service teams, Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Field Service Management is a good option.

4 Ways Data Visualization Will Help Your Organization Become More Data-Driven

January 31, 2021   TIBCO Spotfire
TIBCO DataVisualization scaled e1611632048213 696x365 4 Ways Data Visualization Will Help Your Organization Become More Data Driven

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Is your boss constantly bugging you about getting better at data analytics? Nowadays, it’s not just the data science team that has to think about how to communicate with data. Everyone in a data-driven organization is expected to understand dashboards and develop meaningful data visualizations.

According to recent research by IDC, 70 percent of managers and directors confirm that in the past 12 months their executives have explicitly called for their enterprises to become more data-driven.

So how do you get that done? The latest generation of analytic tools provides the perfect way for both technical and non-technical users to get powerful insights and make an impact.

Support Business Users with Robust Analytics It’s more important than ever to provide business users with robust analytics and data visualization tools to support smarter, faster decisions.

Here are four ways data visualization can help your organization:

Improved response times: Data visualization puts the data into the users’ hands allowing them to more quickly identify issues and improve response times.

Greater simplicity: Using visualizations allows users to get the big picture and see the details at the same time. It simplifies the data by allowing the users to interact only with relevant data.

4 Ways Data Visualization Will Help Your Organization Become More Data Driven

Easier visualization of patterns: Have you ever tried to find patterns in data while reviewing thousands of lines in a spreadsheet? Using visualization allows users to better absorb the data and see new paths. This enables users to identify new patterns and trends that were impossible to see using tabular data. It allows decision-makers to view data using graphical representations including charts, fever charts, and heat maps.

Enhanced collaboration: Collaboration gives teams access to the strengths and skills of everyone involved by combining the experiences of the entire group. These skills can be used to solve problems faster and improve innovation. Using advanced visualizations makes it easier for teams to collaborate. Instead of having to consume tens of thousands of lines of data, they can rely on visual representations that consolidate the data.

Bottom line: AI-driven visual analytics and dashboards allow companies to discover solutions quicker, explore potential patterns, and improve decision making.

Now our joint customers can experience the power of Vantage on Google Cloud – enabling the most complex data analytics at scale – with the simplicity and ease-of-use of Google Cloud Marketplace’s one-stop-shopping environment.”

Vantage on Google Cloud is delivered as-a-service, so companies can start small and elastically scale compute and storage independently, and only when needed. The combination of pricing model flexibility with Vantage software tier choice enables Teradata’s cloud customers to match analytic features and performance with diverse business requirements. Users can combine and query data regardless of where it is located: in Google Cloud Storage, Hadoop, on-premises, and more, and integrate with the preferred data pipeline, business intelligence, and visualization tools of their choice. From Data to Decisions with Actionable Insights

January 30, 2021   Sisense

There’s no industry that couldn’t be improved by actionable insights, and over time, every industry will be. For example, one fintech problem requiring actionable insights today is credit risk assessment. A well-structured fintech algorithm could easily use machine learning (ML) to advise a human agent to approve or reject a business loan application.

That advice is a quintessential actionable insight: The algorithm models the applicant’s probability of success by training on a mountain of historical data and market factors. The resulting insight is the algorithm’s classification of the applicant as an acceptable or unacceptable risk. The action, in this case, is the human agent’s decision to grant or deny the loan. Businesses of all kinds today are dependent on such actionable insights, ideally infused into workflows, driving better business outcomes without users having to leave their primary tasks to look for answers in the data.

Actionable insights: The core of business intelligence

In every industry, actionable insights arising from analytics and AI are no longer a luxury, but a necessity for achieving competitiveness. E-commerce platforms require high-level fraud detection systems to advise their human reps on courses of action. Actionable insights have a special connotation in the field of data analytics: An algorithm evaluates a vast data store and effectively advises a human agent on the best action to take. Implicit among assumptions about machine learning is that algorithms will identify a pattern or outcome in time-series data, for example, which human beings could not do in practical time. There are countless opportunities for turning data into actionable insights in industries like:

  • Finance: Optimal portfolio trading
  • Healthcare: Diagnosis, intervention, administration
  • Advertising: Market analytics and placement
  • Pharma: Protein folding and drug synthesis
  • Retail: Demographics and style trending
  • Education: Assessment and teaching methods

The race to put actionable insights into the hands of users is on. When one player in a field turns data into actionable insights, all competitors must follow suit to keep pace. Innovative use of AI and ML methods in all fields will only accelerate this arms race, putting more powerful actionable insights in the hands of workers of all kinds.

Actionable insights example: Broadridge

Undoubtedly money is the great motivator, and AI solutions must improve profitability. Therefore, let’s see how ML models in asset management and optimal portfolio trading produce actionable insights. Broadridge Broadridge Asset Management Solutions is a $ 4.5 billion revenue assets management company with clients generating unique data stores in diverse containers. An analytics challenge here is the integration of multiple data streams to feed an analytics platform and subsequently generate actionable insights that are valuable across a portfolio spectrum.

On the fundamental level, preparing data for analysis is often called wrangling. To business intelligence execs, the top-level view is the integration of everything from containers to ML technologies and visualizations. Analytics must cope with both structured and unstructured data to achieve optimal results. As we’ll see, very few ML and AI analytics platforms today embody the data science and engineering sophistication to accomplish such a feat with an outcome of actionable insights whose profit justify their cost.

A particularly profitable outcome achieved by Broadridge is the use by its portfolio managers of ML analytics to forecast the best portfolio positions. Broadridge accountants are also leveraging analytics to generate actionable insights that include forecasting accounts receivable and payable outcomes leading to sharper awareness of overall assets.

Infusing actionable insights into workflows — the future of business

Turning data into actionable insights is where BI and data analytics platforms like Sisense shine. Modeling complex and multidimensional data parameters in innovative ways and presenting those insights within workflows will change the future of every industry. For example, these systems will be able to evaluate millions of model configurations and dynamically make corrections to them based on live event streaming data in order to continuously update business-facing users with the best possible insights. The result will be more businesses where all or most decisions are made on underlying data, not gut or guessing, leading to increased conversions, lower churn, and high revenues for those who embrace actionable insights. Those who don’t won’t have much of a future to speak of.

AND THE FUTURE ARRIVES WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT

blank AND THE FUTURE ARRIVES WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT

Hydrogen power-cell fueled trucks.

Quiet.

No diesel smell.

Zooming along highways.

It’s what you used to see in old sci-fi movies, comics, etc.

Here. Now.

General Motors will supply Navistar International with fuel-cell electric vehicle technology for a new semitruck, adding to the automaker’s growing tie-ups in the emerging market.

The companies are billing the collaboration as part of a “complete solution” for customers of Illinois-based truck manufacturer Navistar. The deal, announced Wednesday, includes privately held hydrogen-fuel company OneH2, which will be responsible for hydrogen production, storage, delivery and safety to fuel the truck. Navistar said it will take a minority stake in OneH2 under the agreement. The details of the partnership were not disclosed.

“All parties will play a strong role in developing the consistent solution,” Navistar CEO Persio Lisboa said during a media call. “I think that this is the beginning of something, and we believe that many other customers will be able to join as we move along with the technology and the solution.”

J.B. Hunt Transport is expected to be the first customer to pilot the semitrucks and hydrogen fueling system at the end of 2022, according to the companies. The first trucks are expected to be available for sale in 2024, Lisboa said.

GM will provide Navistar with “fuel-cell power cubes,” which the automaker says will each contain more than 300 hydrogen fuel cells along with thermal- and power-management systems.

The Navistar tie-up is the latest for GM regarding its “Hydrotec” fuel-cell technology. The company has previously partnered with the Army, Honda Motor and France-based Liebherr-Aerospace, among others.

Most recently, GM announced a scaled-back memorandum of understanding to supply fuel-cell technology to embattled electric truck manufacturer Nikola. A GM spokeswoman said the new partnership does not impact its nonbinding deal with Nikola, which remains subject to negotiations and expires at the end of this year if it’s not finalized.

“This is a unique deal,” said Charlie Freese, executive director of GM’s global fuel-cell business. “We have nothing additional to talk about on prior agreements other than what’s already been publicly announced.”

In the summer, GM initially announced a $ 2 billion deal with Nikola. The start-up would give the automaker an 11% stake in the start-up to supply battery and fuel-cell technologies as well as produce a now-terminated Badger pickup.

The deal was initially viewed as a no-lose situation for GM, but the talks became convoluted after short-seller Hindenburg Research lobbed fraud allegations against Nikola and its founder, Trevor Milton, who resigned as the company’s executive chairman in September.

Hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles are viewed as a long-range solution for the trucking industry, which is attempting to move away from diesel-powered vehicles. They operate much like battery-electric vehicles but are powered by electricity generated from hydrogen and oxygen instead of pure batteries.

FCEVs also are quicker to fuel than battery-electric vehicles, which the automotive and trucking industries also are exploring for shorter trips.

Navistar said it’s targeting the fuel-cell-powered semitruck, which it’s calling the International RHTM Series FCEV, to offer more than 500 miles of range and a hydrogen fueling time of less than 15 minutes.

“GM is a trusted partner on the industrial side. And after extensive research, Navistar selected GM to collaborate on fuel-cell technology due to the company’s global leadership in this space,” said Lisboa, citing the automaker’s decades of research and development of hydrogen fuel cells.

AI Weekly: Announcing our ‘AI and the future of health care’ special issue

How open banking is driving huge innovation

Learn how fintechs and forward-thinking FIs are accelerating personalized financial products through data-rich APIs.

Artificial intelligence and health care both deal heavily with issues of complexity, efficacy, and societal impact. All of that is multiplied when the two intersect. As health care providers and vendors work to use AI and data to improve patient care, health outcomes, medical research, and more, they face what are now standard AI challenges. Data is difficult and messy. Machine learning models struggle with bias and accuracy. And ethical challenges abound. But there’s a heightened need to solve these problems when they’re couched within the daily life-and-death context of health care.

Then, in the midst of the AI’s growth in health care, the pandemic hit, challenging old ways of doing things and pushing systems to their breaking points. In our upcoming special issue, “AI and the future of health care,” we examine how providers and vendors are tackling the challenges of this extraordinary time.

The biggest hurdle has to do with data. Health care produces massive amounts of data, from electronic health records (EHR) to imaging to information on hospital bed capacity. There’s enormous promise in using that data to create AI models that can improve care and even help cure diseases, but there are barriers to that progress. Privacy concerns top the list, but worldwide health care data also needs standardization. There are still too many errors in this data, and the medical community must address persisting biases before they become even more entrenched.

When humans rely on AI to help them make clinical decisions like injury or disease diagnoses, they also have to be aware of their own biases. Because bias exists in the data AI models are built upon, practitioners have to be careful not to fall into the trap of automation bias, relying too much on model output to make decisions. It’s a delicate balance with profound impacts on human health and life.

The pandemic has also challenged the practical day-to-day functions of health care systems. As COVID-19 cases threaten to overwhelm hospitals and patients and doctors risk infection during in-person visits, providers are figuring out how to deliver patient care remotely. With more doctors shifting to telemedicine, chatbots and other tools are helping relieve some of the burden and allowing patients to access care from the safety of their own homes.

For particularly vulnerable populations, like senior citizens, remote care may be necessary, especially if they’re in locked-down residential facilities or can’t easily get to their doctor. The technologies involved in monitoring such patients include wearables that track vitals and even special wireless tech that offers no-touch, personalized biometric tracking.

These are sea changes in health care, and because of the pandemic, they’re coming faster than anyone expected. But a certain optimism persists — a sense that despite unprecedented challenges to the medical field, careful and responsible use of AI can enable permanent, positive changes in the health care system. The astonishing speed with which researchers developed a working COVID-19 vaccine offers ample evidence of the way necessity spurs medical innovation. The best of the technologies, tools, and techniques that health care providers are employing now could soon become standard and lead to more democratized, less expensive, and overall better health care.
