Russian hackers reportedly stole NSA data in 2015, likely via Kaspersky software

Russian hackers reportedly stole NSA data in 2015, likely via Kaspersky software

(Reuters) — Russian government-backed hackers stole highly classified U.S. cyber secrets in 2015 from the National Security Agency after a contractor put information on his home computer, two newspapers reported on Thursday.

As reported first by The Wall Street Journal, citing unidentified sources, the theft included information on penetrating foreign computer networks and protecting against cyber attacks and is likely to be viewed as one of the most significant security breaches to date.

In a later story, The Washington Post said the employee had worked at the NSA’s Tailored Access Operations unit for elite hackers before he was fired in 2015.

The NSA declined to comment, citing agency policy “never to comment on our affiliates or personnel issues.” Reuters was not able to independently verify the reports.

If confirmed, the hack would mark the latest in a series of breaches of classified data from the secretive intelligence agency, including the 2013 leaks of data on classified U.S. surveillance programs by contractor Edward Snowden.

Another contractor, Harold Martin, is awaiting trial on charges that he took classified NSA material home. The Washington Post reported that Martin was not involved in the newly disclosed case.

Republican U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement responding to the Journal report that, if true, the details were alarming.

”The NSA needs to get its head out of the sand and solve its contractor problem,“ Sasse said. ”Russia is a clear adversary in cyberspace and we can’t afford these self-inflicted injuries.”

Tensions are already high in Washington over U.S. allegations of a surge in hacking of American targets by Russians, including the targeting of state election agencies and the hacking of Democratic Party computers in a bid to sway the outcome of the 2016 presidential election in favor of Republican Donald Trump.

Citing unidentified sources, both the Journal and the Post also reported that the contractor used antivirus software from Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab, the company whose products were banned from U.S. government networks last month because of suspicions they help the Kremlin conduct espionage.

Kaspersky Lab has strongly denied those allegations.

Russian government officials could have used flaws in Kaspersky software to hack into the machine in question, security experts told Reuters. They could also have intercepted traffic from the machine to Kaspersky computers.

Kaspersky said in a statement on Thursday that it found itself caught in the middle of a geopolitical fight.

“Kaspersky Lab has not been provided any evidence substantiating the company’s involvement in the alleged incident reported by the Wall Street Journal,” it said. “It is unfortunate that news coverage of unproven claims continue to perpetuate accusations about the company.”

The Department of Homeland Security on Sept. 13 banned Kaspersky products in federal networks, and the U.S. Senate approved a bill to ban them from use by the federal government, citing concerns the company may be a pawn of the Kremlin and poses a national security risk.

James Lewis, a cyber expert with the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the report of the breach sounded credible, though he did not have firsthand information on what had transpired.

“The baffling parts are that he was able to get stuff out of the building and that he was using Kaspersky, despite where he worked,” Lewis said. He said that intelligence agencies have considered Kaspersky products to be a source of risk for years.

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who led calls in Congress to purge Kaspersky Lab products from government networks, on Thursday called on the Trump administration to declassify information about threats posed by Kaspersky Lab.

“It’s a disservice to the public and our national security to continue withholding this information,” Shaheen said in a statement.

Full Text indexing now provided for CRM On-premise customers with Update 0.1 and later!

By default, Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 with Update 0.1 installed uses the same search functionality that was available in previous releases, which is based mostly on string matches. Now, with CRM 2015 Update 0.1 or later, CRM system administrators have the option to use full-text indexing for Quick Find.

We recommend that you consider enabling full-text indexing for Quick Find because it can provide a better search experience by improving query performance. Full-text search also uses more sophisticated indexing methods that includes support for linguistic-based searches and superior relevance ranking. While the previous search method (standard indexing) returns results based on literal matches, full-text indexing returns linguistic-based matches. For example, the term “service” can return similar words like servicing and serviced.

Note to CRM Administrators: When you enable full-text indexing for a database with a large number of columns, the size of the transaction log of the organization database may increase. So as always when configuring Quick Find, consider the implications by reviewing the full TechNet documentation for this feature addition: Configure Quick Find options for the organization

Support for new technologies provided by CRM 2015 Updates:

The Microsoft Dynamics CRM Engineering team consistently tests Microsoft Dynamics CRM and associated CRM Updates against pre-release and release versions of technology stack components that Microsoft Dynamics interoperates with. When appropriate, Microsoft releases enhancements via future Microsoft Dynamics CRM Updates or new major version releases to assure compatibility with future releases of these products. This compatibility matrix is updated via this Microsoft Knowledge Base article: Microsoft Dynamics CRM Compatibility List.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Update 0.1 provides support for:

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Update 0.2 provides support for:

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Update 0.3 provides no new technologies support

Hotfixes and updates that you have to enable or configure manually

Occasionally, updates released via Microsoft Dynamics CRM Updates require manual configuration to enable them. Microsoft Dynamics CRM Updates are always cumulative; for example, Update 0.2 will contain all fixes previously released via Update 0.1 as well as fixes newly released via Update 0.2. So if you install Update 0.2 on a machine upon which you previously installed no Updates, you will need to manually enable any desired fixes for Update Rollups 0.1-0.2:

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Update 0.1: no updates requiring manual configuration
  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Update 0.2: no updates requiring manual configuration
  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Update 0.3: no updates requiring manual configuration

Why a blog regarding a “CRM Online Update”?

As you probably know, Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Update 1.0 was generally considered to be the Online-only server changes code-named Carina. However, there are 3 sets of packages (32- and 64-bit) on the Microsoft Download Center and Microsoft Update, Update 1.2, that are also compatible with CRM 2015 On-Premise, and contain changes not in already released Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Update 0.1:

  • CRM 2015 Client for Microsoft Office Outlook
  • CRM 2015 MUI (Multi-Language User Interface
  • CRM 2015 Email router

Note the naming convention change! Post-RTM Updates used to be called Update Rollups, now they’re just called Updates with the version number:

Was: Microsoft Dynamics CRM Update Rollup 1 or 2

Is now: Microsoft Dynamics CRM Update 0.1 or 0.2

For more details, see the Dynamics CRM Product Group blog “New naming conventions for Microsoft Dynamics CRM updates“

Hey Trump lovers, August 2015 is over – just stop thinking he's Batman, he really IS Lex Luthor

April 17, 2016   Humor
Hey Trump lovers, August 2015 is over just stop thinking he's Batman, he really IS Lex Luthor

DONALD TRUMP SUES BATMAN V SUPERMAN OVER EERILY SIMILAR LEX LUTHOR CHARACTER

DONALD TRUMP SUES BATMAN V SUPERMAN OVER EERILY SIMILAR LEX LUTHOR CHARACTER

He landed among the fair and good people of Iowa in a Trump copter that, as The Post reported, kicked up an apt metaphor of a duststorm. Then, in canny (and canned) fashion, the leading GOP contender offered rides to some of the cheering children. And one of these kids, 9-year-old William, was savvy enough to be toting a GoPro camera.

Hey Trump lovers, August 2015 is over just stop thinking he's Batman, he really IS Lex Luthor

“Mr. Trump?” inquired the lens-wielding William.

“Yes?” said The Helicopter Don.

“Are you Batman?”

“I am Batman.”

www.washingtonpost.com/…

Lex Luthor has been Superman’s archenemy for most of the superhero’s existence. He has been envisioned as Superman’s dual opposite; morally depraved and relying on intellect over strength. Rather than harnessing his genius for good, Luthor seizes power for his own benefit and is a threat at large. Though originally portrayed as a rogue scientist, he was later rewritten as a Machiavellian industrialist and white-collar criminal (even briefly serving as President of the United States). Later characterizations have shown elements of both interpretations…

There are many tales, or ‘interpretations’ of how exactly Lex became rich. In some instances he was a scientific genius and gained his fortune via his inventions. Others (more commonly) explain Lex as a ruthless tycoon.

In the comics series, Lex used his money and natural genius to create the multinational corporation “LexCorp” that would ultimately come to dominate the city of Metropolis...

Later, when Gotham City was destroyed by an earthquake and then abandoned by the American government in the early 2000s, it was LexCorp that took up the massive task of rebuilding the city. Unbeknownst to the populace, Luthor also took the opportunity to destroy property records so he could seize any land he wanted. By gaining a foothold in Gotham, Luthor made an enemy in Bruce Wayne, who publically denounced him.

323 marketing tech startups fetched over $11B from VCs in 2015 (research)

January 29, 2016   Big Data

In 2015, marketing tech swelled in deal sizes, frequency, and valuations like never before. 2016 is off to a similar start. In a new MoneyTree Report from PWC and the National Venture Capital Associate, VCs cooled on later-stage growth investments, particularly in tech, at the end of last year. Whether that’s due to fluctuating financial markets, markdowns from institutional investors, global conflicts, or other factors, investors are shifting the model to value revenue over growth in the later stages.

But it’s the exact opposite for new funding. VCs are still stepping on the gas for early and seed stage companies, particularly in marketing tech. We’ve tracked every one of those investments, and they’re starting to paint a clear picture of what it means for marketers, CMOs, CIOs, and even sales teams.

Namely, you better step up your data analytics game, stat.

In a new VB Insight report on Q4 venture capital funding, we tracked $ 7.4 billion in moving money (new funding and exits) for marketing tech in Q4 of 2015 alone. The volume of deals, in amounts, frequency, and categories of software are all trackable and trending a few very specific ways.

Data management, if it isn’t already, will be a priority for CMOs in 2016:

There’s customer data, inventory data, log data, search data, reporting, analytics, CRM, session data, et. al – with different vendors supporting each one, often in its own data silo.

This rise in customer data invariably means a rise in the sheer volume of enterprise data. Evolving customer expectations and real-time marketing trends necessitate a need for faster data processing and simplified data access. Companies are generating more data than ever, while the window to batch and process it (and deliver it with context) is shrinking to real-time.

Queue the seemingly limitless ascent of data analytics platforms. By some accounts, even specialized areas of analytics like predictive marketing will be a $ 30 billion (or $ 100+ billion, depending who you’re asking) industry in five years. We’re hard pressed to disagree. Take a look at the funding data for 2015:

2015 totals 323 marketing tech startups fetched over $11B from VCs in 2015 (research)

That’s nearly $ 1.5 billion funneled into pure play analytics startups — these are dashboard companies, journey-mappers, audience-measurers — nearly all with super sophisticated data-mining pulling from proprietary databases. It’s a dart throw for who’s going to win right now, since the use-cases for big data for marketers are still coming to life and the models are still being created (i.e., tell Teradata you invented predictive analytics, and you’ll get laughed out of the room).

The full report includes an in-depth analysis on Q4 activity, as well as the full data from 2015 — and is available on VB Insight.

While the early part of the year saw huge dollar amounts given to customer-facing tech like programmatic advertising, it appears VCs have cooled on that opportunity as the state of delivering ads continues to be too convoluted for marketers to safely spend money on (but they’re spending it anyway, in record figures).

Backbone/infrastructure players should come last, given recent developments in database technology and firmly entrenched players in major categories like CRM. However it’s a rapidly growing category led by a handful of big dollar deals (AppDirect for $ 140 million, AppDynamics for $ 241 million, Twilio for $ 130 million, CloudFlare for $ 110 million, GitHub for $ 250 million, Unisys for $ 350 million — to name a handful).
