Mobileye proposes automatic preventative braking to eliminate ‘nearly all’ rear-end collisions

Mobileye proposes automatic preventative braking to eliminate ‘nearly all’ rear end collisions

Intel’s Mobileye announced plenty at its 2019 Consumer Electronics Show keynote in Las Vegas this afternoon, including a partnership with Valeo, a plan to supply a pair of China-based companies with tools to achieve truly driverless public transportation, and a mapping project underway with Great Britain’s Ordnance Survey. But one thing that slipped through the cracks was automatic preventative braking (APB), an augmented form of automatic emergency braking that uses formulas to determine when cars enter dangerous situations.

The idea is to prevent collisions by bringing vehicles a slow, gradual stop when a potential hazard comes into view.

As Amnon Shashua, CEO of Mobileye, explained in a blog post: “APB would help the vehicle return to a safer position by applying small, barely noticeable preventative braking instead of sudden braking to prevent a collision … Rather than inserting obstacles that interfere with traffic flow … APB will proactively adjust the vehicle’s speed to maintain safety only when necessary, therefore improving safety without sacrificing traffic flow.”

Shashua believes that if APB were installed with a single forward-facing camera in every car, it would eliminate a “substantial” portion of front-to-rear crashes resulting from careless driving. Furthermore, he contends that an APB system with surround camera sensing and location awareness could eliminate “nearly all” rear-end fender benders.

Those are bold claims, but Mobileye’s not exactly new to this.

In October 2017, it proposed a road-safe model for autonomous cars — Responsibility-Sensitive Safety (RSS) — at the World Knowledge Forum in Seoul, South Korea. An accompanying whitepaper described it as a “deterministic … formula” with “logically provable” rules of the road intended to prevent self-driving vehicles from causing accidents. Less abstractly, it’s a common sense approach to on-the-road decision-making that codifies good habits, like maintaining a safe following distance and giving other cars the right of way.

If they work as promised, automated accident-prevention tech like RSS and APB could be a godsend for the millions of people who risk their lives every time they step into a car. About 94 percent of car crashes are caused by human error, and in 2016, the top three causes of traffic fatalities were distracted driving, drunk driving, and speeding. According to the National Safety Council, Americans’ odds of dying in a car crash are one in 114, and in 2016, motor vehicle deaths claimed 40,000 lives.

“We … hope that ubiquitous adoption could lead to nearly zero fatalities and injuries from road accidents resulting from wrong driving decision-making,” Shashua said.

Google advances AI with ‘one model to learn them all’

Google advances AI with ‘one model to learn them all’

Google quietly released an academic paper that could provide a blueprint for the future of machine learning. Called “One Model to Learn Them All,” it lays out a template for how to create a single machine learning model that can address multiple tasks well.

The MultiModel, as the Google researchers call it, was trained on a variety of tasks, including translation, language parsing, speech recognition, image recognition, and object detection. While its results don’t show radical improvements over existing approaches, they illustrate that training a machine learning system on a variety of tasks could help boost its overall performance.

For example, the MultiModel improved its accuracy on machine translation, speech, and parsing tasks when trained on all of the operations it was capable of, compared to when the model was just trained on one operation.

Google’s paper could provide a template for the development of future machine learning systems that are more broadly applicable, and potentially more accurate, than the narrow solutions that populate much of the market today. What’s more, these techniques (or those they spawn) could help reduce the amount of training data needed to create a viable machine learning algorithm.

That’s because the team’s results show that when the MultiModel is trained on all the tasks it’s capable of, its accuracy improves on tasks with less training data. That’s important, since it can be difficult to accumulate a sizable enough set of training data in some domains.

However, Google doesn’t claim to have a master algorithm that can learn everything at once. As its name implies, the MultiModel network includes systems that are tailor-made to address different challenges, along with systems that help direct input to those expert algorithms. This research does show that the approach Google took could be useful for future development of similar systems that address different domains.

It’s also worth noting that there’s plenty more testing to be done. Google’s results haven’t been verified, and it’s hard to know how well this research generalizes to other fields. The Google Brain team has released the MultiModel code as part of the TensorFlow open source project, so other people can experiment with it and find out.

Google also has some clear paths to improvement. The team pointed out that they didn’t spend a lot of time optimizing some of the system’s fixed parameters (known as “hyperparameters” in machine learning speak), and going through more extensive tweaking could help improve accuracy in the future.

Updated 10:45: This story initially said that there was not a timetable for releasing the MultiModel code under an open source license. The code was released last week. This story has been updated to note that and include a link to the repository.

Jamie Foxx Moves Forward With His Directorial Debut ‘All Star Weekend’!

Jamie Foxx Moves Forward With His Directorial Debut ‘All Star Weekend’!

Jamie Foxx

Reading this news, I thought we’d covered the project in the past, and, sure enough, digging through the S&A archives, I found a 2012 interview with Jamie Foxx, while he was doing press for the Project Imaginat10n short film he directed (under Ron Howard’s watch), during which he shared plans to direct a feature comedy film, as long as all the various parts came together, stating: “I got a film I want to direct, it’s called ‘All Star Weekend.’ It’s about two guys, one guy loves Kobe Bryant, the other guy loves LeBron James. When you talk about LeBron and Kobe, it’s like talking about Republican and Democrat. It is all the way out there funny. I’ve talked to Kevin Hart, and I’ve talked to Ken Jeong from ‘The Hangover.’ I would probably make a cameo in it. Hopefully we’ll get that going really soon.”

Four years later, it appears that the project is now ready for Foxx to direct it, although no word on casting at this time, nor whether Keving Hart and Ken Jeong, who he said he’d talked to previously, are still in his sights. Chances are that Hart, who has seen his star rise exponentially over the last 4 years, might be too expensive and busy for Foxx at the moment.

But offers are said to be out to actors, with added word that Foxx may also produce a theme song for the film which will be included on a soundtrack that is planned for Epic Records.

I should note that, in the same 2012 interview, Foxx also shared his strong desire to make a “Skank Robbers” movie, because, as he said, “the script that we have is so clever and so smart. But it comes down to Martin [Lawrence]. I think it would be a blast to do those characters again one more time.”

The characters were of course Wanda and Sheneneh.

“Skank Robbers” the movie never happened, thankfully! And let’s hope it stays that way, and isn’t just in Limbo like “All Star Weekend” has been, waiting for its various necessary parts to finally come together.

By the way, this won’t be Jamie Foxx’s first time behind the camera; his IMDBPro page lists a 2011 TV movie called “Night Tales,” which never aired; at least there’s no confirmation that it did.

Showbiz 411 was first to report the news of “All Star Weekend’s” revival.

– “Dope”
– “Straight Outta Compton”

Tony Rock To Host Russell Simmons’ ‘All Def Movie Awards’!

February 12, 2016   Humor

Russell Simmons’ All Def Digital (ADD) network has announced the first-ever All Def Movie Awards, which will take place just days before the Oscars, at the World Famous TCL Chinese 6 Theatres. The live event will be held on February 24 and hosted by Tony Rock – as in Chris Rock’s brother; the same Chris Rock who is hosting the Oscars.

Awards will be recognized by members of the All Def Academy, who today announced the following films will compete for Best Picture of 2015:

– “Beasts of No Nation”
– “Chi-Raq”
– “Concussion”
– “Creed”
– “Dope”
– “Straight Outta Compton”

Members of the public can vote for two categories in the All Def Movie Awards (Best Picture and Most Quoted Movie) online  at http://bit.ly/AllDefMA, through midnight on February 23rd.

The All Def Movie Awards, which will be held just yards from the Academy Awards stage, will feature a Black Carpet for celebrity presenters, arrivals and VIP guests. The show will also feature a special live musical performance, and a consistent stream of video content before, during and after the show on all of ADD’s social channels, including Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat and Periscope.

“If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself,” said Tony Rock. “With that in mind I have teamed up… with ADD to bring you the ‘All inclusive’, All Def Movie Awards. We’ll honor the entire movie making process. Great acting, mediocre acting as well as horrible acting. Soundtracks. Wardrobes. Maybe even craft services (the best part of the set). This is the award show Hollywood has been waiting for.”

Added Russell Simmons, founder and chairman of All Def Digital, “I don’t expect a 90 year-old Academy member to see ‘Straight Outta Compton’ or vote for it. I’m more concerned that in 2016 there continues to be a stunning lack of diversity in the studios, in the green light process, in the decisions of what films and television series get made, and what actors get chosen. This needs to be addressed institutionally. The All Def Movie Awards are not the Black Oscars, but they could be. This will be a fun, entertaining and hopefully thought provoking celebration of the uncelebrated.”

The All Def Movie Awards will be programmed as part of  All Def Comedy Live, a live weekly comedy showcase. HBO is currently developing a series around the weekly event, which routinely draws celebrities and the best new, emerging and established artists working America’s comedy stages.

Admission is by invitation only, but a select number of seats will be reserved for fans by lottery.

All Def Digital (ADD) is a multi-platform media company for millennials focusing on urban youth culture through premium video programming across comedy, music, lifestyle and topical and timely social commentary.

“All Our Senses Are Being Controlled”

October 5, 2015   Humor

boldness Philippe Petit “All Our Senses Are Being Controlled”

Even in the twentieth century, Philippe Petit was living in the wrong time.

The high-wire artist, a Marcel Marceau of mid-air, practiced a timeless art in an age when the clock had ascended, quantifying human activity, eclipsing idleness. In scaling the Twin Towers, one of the major symbols of what the Industrial Age transformation had created, he briefly chastened the new reality with his old-world acrobatics, conferring upon them a dignity and romance they hadn’t previously known.

As The Walk is released, here’s a piece from a 2014 New York Times Magazine interview Petit did with Jessica Gross, explaining his dual feelings about this century’s technology:

Question:

You seem to have an ambivalent relationship with your computer. In the book, you call it your “necessary evil tool.”

Philippe Petit:

I hate all electronic things that are supposed to help the human being. You don’t smell, you don’t hear, you don’t touch anymore. All our senses are being controlled. At the same time, I am a total imbecile because to have a little iPhone that can take pictures, that can find the nearest hospital, that can tell you the weather in Jakarta — it’s probably fabulous. I’m supposed to be a man of balance, but my state of mind in those things is very unbalanced. I love or I hate.•
