Baby In Vogue: Sustainable Diapers

November 28, 2019   BI News and Info
 Baby In Vogue: Sustainable Diapers

As women increasingly choose to complete higher education and focus on their careers first, global fertility rates are dropping. While the global trend of women having fewer babies and later in life is growing, the corresponding rise in income tends to increase the average spend per baby, too. We’re seeing a boom in the baby market, in both affordable and premium segments, whether you look at baby fashion, baby food, or babies’ nappies/diapers (USD 37.6 billion in 2018) or disposable pants (USD 8.2 billion in 2018).

What’s more, the global baby diaper market’s value is increasing. Obviously, babies are its most valuable customers. And retailers should consider pampering babies, particularly as they can capitalize on the growing trend for sustainability in premium and natural fashion, food, and diapers.

From toxic to green diapers

On a daily basis, around 10 million diapers are used and thrown away in Germany alone. Worldwide, this makes 250 million disposable diapers used every single day, thrown away, ending up in landfills – where a single-use disposable diaper takes up to 500 years to biodegrade and decompose.

Obviously, the world needs circular solutions to conquer babies’ diaper waste. And politics are getting involved. Vanuatu, a small Pacific Island nation, announced a ban on single-use disposable diapers, becoming the first nation to take such a bold step forward. While the world recognizes the environmental problems that single-use disposable diapers pose, the European Union’s Extended Producer Responsibility law puts the onus on producers to make, take, and contribute sustainable product stewardship.

With significant focus on and consumer demand for sustainable solutions, we’re seeing an expansion of products in the natural segment. The leader in disposable diapers, Procter & Gamble, introduced the Pure Protection brand of baby nappies/diapers and wipes. While still small in sales, Pure Protection rose quickly within the natural-product segment to become among the top such brands in the US.

However, most brands in the natural segment are emphasizing their use of cotton, which is often criticized for its unsustainability and being non-environmentally friendly, so they need to innovate on ingredients, recycling technology, and waste management. This is crucial for securing growth, brand competitiveness, consumer loyalty, and environmental progress.

Taking little green steps with a biodegradable and eco-friendly diaper

Raising an eco-friendly baby by utilizing sustainable products is simple when you know what to shop for. For biodegradable diapers that are free of perfumes, chlorine, plastic, and genetically modified organisms, go for Nature Babycare (Naty). Or seek out BAMBO Nature when looking for hypoallergenic diapers that are free of harmful chemicals such as chlorine, organotins, PVC, phthalates, latex, heavy metals, and formaldehyde. Other brands to consider: Love & Green, Lillydoo, Les Petits Culottés, Pampers Harmonie, Seventh Generation, and Earth’s Best. The Honest Company‘s diapers are non-toxic and hypoallergenic. Babyganics are considered the most affordable biodegradable diapers. Broody Chick Eco-Natural is 100% biodegradable but still more expensive than the average diapers. If you want to use bamboo, consider Andy Pandy. Organic diapers are trying to pure, green, nature, and eco-friendly – even in their packaging, which is evoking to be sustainable and good for the planet.

Born to be a sustainable superstar

With my nephew’s arrival, I am strongly considering what’s best for him and the world he is about to conquer. Protecting this cute little boy has become my first priority. Second is improving his life by guiding the retail and fashion ecosystems on a shared mission for a sustainable, circular economy.

Join me for creating a better world for our babies!

Amazon’s Baby Activity Skill API lets Alexa developers build apps that track tots’ activities

Amazon’s Baby Activity Skill API lets Alexa developers build apps that track tots’ activities

Alexa just became a tad more tot-friendly. Amazon today announced the Baby Activity Skill API, a new API that enables developers to build third-party apps that help customers keep track of baby activities — for example, like logging the time of diaper changes. It’s available in the U.S. starting today.

“Consistency is critical for customers who are looking to log their baby-related activities,” June Lee, a data engineer at Amazon, wrote in a blog post. “However, it isn’t always easy for parents and caregivers to log consistently and in a timely manner — they may be tired from barely sleeping the night before, or their hands may be tied up with the latest mess. With the Baby Activity Skill API, [developers] can build Alexa skills and that enable … customers to easily log and query activity information using just their voice.”

The Baby Activity Skill API includes a set of interfaces — Weight, Sleep, DiaperChange, and InfantFeeding currently, with more due out in the near future — designed to make the baby activity skill-building process easier than before. Those interfaces describe messages that can be used to develop Alexa skills for apps and devices, and offer data management, timer directives, and query directives for adding baby activities, timing sessions, and asking questions about activities.

Alexa skills that take advantage can recognize utterances like:

  • User: Alexa, Jane woke up from a 3-hour nap.
  • User: Alexa, log a bottle feeding of 6 ounces for Jane.
  • User: Alexa, when was the last diaper change?
  • User: Alexa, what was Jane’s average weight last month?

Some of the first developers to tap the Baby Activity Skill API are Hatch Baby and Wildflower Health, which added interfaces to their pregnancy and early childhood apps. (Not-so-coincidentally, Hatch Baby announced today that it’s taking investment from Amazon;s Alexa Fund.) Baby Connect — another early adopter — says the Baby Activity Skill API led to “an increase in engagement from the parents” who use its Baby Activity skill.

“Voice is a powerful tool that increases the accessibility of your service,” Lee said. “It can help increase consistent input and make your service more valuable, increasing usage and retention … We are excited for [developers] to leverage the power of voice to further increase the value of your services for your customers.”

Alexa might be becoming more baby-friendly, but it’s already pretty kid-friendly.

In April, Amazon released the Echo Dot for Kids, an $ 80 Echo Dot wrapped in a padded foam enclosure that comes with a two-year damage replacement warranty and one year of FreeTime Unlimited. FreeTime for Alexa — which starts at $ 2.99 for Prime members and $ 4.99 per month for one child or $ 9.99 per month for a family plan for non-Prime members — allows parents to review their kids’ activity, put time limits on their usage, or block songs with explicit lyrics on Amazon Music. Moreover, it brings exclusive features to the table, such as ad-free radio or playlists, alarms from Disney and Nickelodeon characters, and premium skills from National Geographic, Nickelodeon, and others.

Little Unicorn Delivers a Fresh Style of Baby Products

September 5, 2018   NetSuite

Posted by Ian McCue, Commerce Content Manager

When Matthew Huff, the founder of Little Unicorn, observed the baby goods industry in 2014, he saw that even as business boomed, with a flurry of new products and brands, there was a lack of design innovation. Many of the patterns and designs in the baby products category had not evolved to appeal to today’s generation of parents – there was still an abundance of traditional blue and pink products with stale patterns, a mainstay from previous generations.

That inspired Huff to create a line of fresh, stylish and affordable baby blankets, diaper bags, bibs, crib sheets and other accessories under the Little Unicorn brand.

Huff, the company’s president, recruited graphic design students from nearby Utah State University to form Little Unicorn’s initial in-house team to create the designs that are now a hallmark of the retailer’s products.

In September 2014, he launched the brand at a major industry tradeshow in Las Vegas and received a remarkably positive response. That was the start of something special.

“We just try to have fun on the creative side and create these prints with something original from the start so that the end product will have that handmade feel,” Huff said. “It was the right guess, you could say, that people are really looking for that.”

Quality is at the heart of everything Little Unicorn sells. All items are constructed with one of five fabric types – cotton muslin, brushed muslin, organic muslin, deluxe muslin and percale – that vary in price, softness and breathability. Third parties test all products to ensure they meet or exceed regulatory standards and give customers peace of mind when caring for their children.

Customers Embrace the Products

Just like at the tradeshow, parents quickly embraced baby goods with contemporary aesthetics.

Little Unicorn established itself as a reputable and popular brand for baby products – it grew exponentially the first year, has achieved double-digit growth year-over-year since then and now claims almost 250,000 Instagram followers.

The retailer sells through its own website, about 1,400 boutique retailers across the country and large national retail chains including Target, Amazon, Nordstrom, buybuy BABY and Anthropologie.

Still headquartered in Logan, Utah, the business now ships about 7,500 orders per month from four warehouses in California, Tennessee, Canada and China. It plans to continue building out that distribution network in 2019.

“We focused on people and we focused on product, and then we focused on our logistics,” Huff said. “If you focus on getting better, bigger kind of just takes care of itself.”

While thrilled with its early success, Little Unicorn dealt with typical growing pains. At one point, 60 percent of its inventory was out-of-stock. Incorrect shipments, backorders that led to incomplete shipments and chargeback fees from vendors were common, creating headaches for employees, hurting the bottom line and damaging the brand’s reputation.

Building a Storybook Customer Experience

As Little Unicorn’s order volumes climbed, Huff and his team quickly realized manual processes for accounting, inventory management and order processing were no longer sustainable. It needed a solution that automated processes to prevent errors, save time and, most importantly, improve the experience for both wholesale buyers and consumers. Customers needed accurate, real-time inventory information, better communication and faster delivery times.

That goal led the retailer to adopt a unified, cloud-based solution to run their key back-office operations and financial processes. Now, orders are automatically routed to the warehouse and shipped within 24 hours. Order confirmations, invoices and tracking numbers are automatically sent without any staff member touching it.

B2B Ecommerce Keeps Buyers Happy

After focusing on getting its back-office system in place, Little Unicorn invested in ecommerce software to build a site for wholesale customers. At the time, orders came in via email, fax and phone. The retailer built a B2B ecommerce site where buyers can view the full product catalog, see real-time inventory, access account-specific pricing, place orders and pay invoices.

Little Unicorn got its B2B ecommerce site up and running in 21 days in 2017, just in time to show it to wholesale buyers at the same tradeshow where Huff launched the brand in 2014.

Their ecommerce platform allows B2B customers to order products online without outside help – sales reps can focus on strengthening relationships with international distributors and building out new product lines.

What started as a hunch that people wanted a fresh look for baby-related products has turned into an extremely successful business. After only four years, Little Unicorn has become a major player in the baby products space, with no signs of slowing down.

Quietly powering Little Unicorn’s business transformation is NetSuite’s cloud business platform, with a natively integrated solution for ERP, B2B ecommerce, order and inventory management and customer relationship management (CRM).

“We’re going to keep selling, keep the customers happy and then we’re going to grow into international markets,” Director of Finance and Operations Jordan Brandley said. “We have so many things on the docket we want to keep growing with and NetSuite really does help enable all of that.”
