“Lord, would you allow Donald Trump to have a second term as president of the United States.”

December 5, 2020   Humor
Lord, would you allow Donald Trump to have a second term as president of the United States.

“All gods, the pagan as well as the Christian ones, have possessed a real existence. Did not the ancient Moloch reign? Was not the Delphic Apollo a real power in the life of the Greeks?”

God regrets that he took this Zoom call from Michele Bachmann, thinking it was Marsha Blackburn.

Then there’s whether he’ll skip the inaugural.

But not all transitions have been quite so cordial. If he insists on staying away, Trump would be the fourth incumbent to refuse to attend the inauguration of his successor, Thomas Balcerski, associate history professor at Eastern Connecticut State University, told Newsweek.

The first incumbent no-show was John Adams in 1801, who faced a challenge from his own vice president Thomas Jefferson.

At the time, electors voted twice, with the vice presidency and presidency going to the candidates with the second-highest and highest number of votes. A tie between Jefferson and running mate Aaron Burr was followed by the House of Representatives choosing Jefferson and ending Adams’ tenure. Before the ceremony, he left Washington at 4 a.m. on March 4, the date for inaugurations until 1933.

His son John Quincy Adams followed suit, leaving Washington before the celebrations of Andrew Jackson in 1829. Meanwhile in 1869, Andrew Jackson Johnson, who like Trump had survived an impeachment trial, refused to attend the inauguration of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, preferring instead to stay in the White House to sign legislation.

Circumstances rather than point-blank refusals were behind the inauguration absences of three other incumbents.

In 1921, poor health prevented Woodrow Wilson from attending Warren G. Harding’s inauguration, although they did ride from the White House to the Capitol together.

On August 9, 1974, Richard Nixon resigned at noon and flew off in Marine One, after which Gerald Ford took the oath of office in the White House.

Another presidential no-show occurred on March 4, 1841 when President-elect William Henry Harrison rode to the Capitol on a white charger. Incumbent Martin Van Buren was nowhere to be seen, although his vice president, Richard Mentor Johnson, did attend Harrison’s inauguration. However, Van Buren was probably not invited by Harrison to participate so it would not be qualified as a snub, Balcerski said.

Donald Trump’s America

July 17, 2020   Humor

The Trump campaign has released a new political ad, “You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America”.

There’s just one problem — the video is completely in the present tense. The voice-over uses present tense — as if Biden is already president — and the images and video of protests and violence are also from the present, which is in Donald Trump’s America.

The ad seems rather weak, actually. It claims that Biden wants to “defund the police”, even though Biden has consistently said the opposite. Instead, they have Biden saying “Yes. Absolutely!”, which sounds like it was taken out of context and could have been about almost anything. The entire ad has production values of a cheesy horror show, or of a melodramatic movie like “Reefer Madness“. So, watch it if you DARE!

The Washington Post fact checked this ad, and gave it 4 Pinocchios (a whopper of a lie).

Today, Unca Donald may get the Money Bin opened-up without the Beagle Boys.

July 12, 2020   Humor
Today, Unca Donald may get the Money Bin opened up without the Beagle Boys.

“Huey, Dewey, and Louie are the nephews of Donald Duck and the great-nephews of Scrooge McDuck. Like their uncles, the boys are anthropomorphic white ducks with yellow-orange bills and feet. Scrooge is an elderly Scottish anthropomorphic Pekin duck with a yellow-orange bill, legs, and feet. He typically wears a red or blue frock coat, top hat, pince-nez glasses, and spats. He is portrayed in animations as speaking with a Scottish accent. The son of Hortense and Quackmore Duck, this Donald is very similar to his main universe counterpart — a hot-tempered duck with a good heart and a quacky voice (which has somehow not stopped him from earning a major in public speaking.)”

Cartoon characters without pants might have to drop drawers as SCOTUS finally rules on Trump’s financial records today. There will be an over/under and perhaps even a split difference, but regardless there will be strong, powerful, or even strongly or powerfully Trump distractions. Bigly matters will at least be referenced since niece Mary Trump reminds us of the massive tax fraud committed by the Trump family. Yet would we be surprised if they eviscerated Congressional oversight and let Trump off scot free. 716-671.

On related matters:

The U.S. Supreme Court all but guaranteed House Democrats won’t get pre-election access to confidential materials from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, agreeing to hear a Trump administration appeal likely to extend a legal fight into next year.

The justices said they will review a lower court order that would require the Justice Department to turn over redacted parts of Mueller’s 448-page report, along with underlying grand jury transcripts and exhibits. The Supreme Court will consider the case in the nine-month term that starts in October.

The House Judiciary Committee sought the records as part of its impeachment inquiry last year. President Donald Trump was impeached on different grounds by the Democratic-controlled House before being acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate.

Democrats say the materials would help them determine whether Trump committed impeachable offenses by obstructing the FBI’s and Mueller’s investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Mueller found 10 instances of possible obstruction of justice but stopped short of determining whether Trump had engaged in obstruction.

Trump and Attorney General William Barr “are continuing to try to run out the clock on any and all accountability,” House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler of New York said in an emailed statement. “While I am confident their legal arguments will fail, it is now all the more important for the American people to hold the president accountable at the ballot box in November.”

Nothing SCOTUS decides tomorrow — either way — will result in the public release of the tax information Trump has been so desperate to conceal from voters in time for the 2020 election. So the thing to look for is whether SCOTUS upholds or rejects Trump’s “I am the law” boast.

“Donald J. Trump, Come on down!” … why Trump should testify before Congress

Donald J. Trump, Come on down! ... why Trump should testify before Congress

stable genius, cleaning out the Augean stables

The call was perfect, so perfect that unlike his written responses during the Mueller report, Florida Man should appear in open session and testify before Congress. Because isn’t he the stable genius, smarter than all his generals.

He’s all about the stunts, and because short of dog-wagging, he’s now going to need to draw attention from the ever-firm facts of impeachment.

All Trump really wanted from Zelensky was the TV spectacle of announcing an investigation of Biden to be used in 2020 ads. That’s how he’ll rationalize bribery/extortion, abuse of power, and obstruction of justice.

What a historic moment for one of the worst presidents in history, like Gerald Ford in 1974 after he pardoned Nixon.

It’s time to get serious. You’re facing possible impeachment and removal. If you have witnesses that can exonerate you, you should stop blocking them from testifying. Otherwise, we can only conclude you have a deep, deep consciousness of guilt. https://t.co/hndaRI0nQR

Hypocrisy, thy name is Donald Trump Jr.

October 31, 2019   Humor

I wish my name was Hunter Biden. I could go abroad, make millions off my father’s presidency. I’d be a really rich guy.

— Donald Trump Jr. speaking (naturally) on Fox News

For a bit of added irony (and stupidity), note that junior said “presidency”, not “vice presidency”. Is Don-ette talking about the past or the future?

The apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree. The US economy grew at an annual rate of 1.9% in the third quarter of this year. Yesterday, Donald Trump said this was “The Greatest Economy in American History!”. But in 2012, Donald Trump described a 1.9% increase in GDP by saying “The economy is in deep trouble.”

Mo’Nique Reveals How She Became Part Of The Short Films For Donald Glover’s Adidas Campaign

MoNique Mo’Nique Reveals How She Became Part Of The Short Films For Donald Glover’s Adidas Campaign

Mo’Nique came back in fighting form thanks to ads developed by Donald Glover for Adidas to promote his new “Nizza” shoes. The series of ads showed Mo’Nique roasting the living daylights out of Glover, taking him to task for being all manner of bougie. If you’ve been like many out there who have been wondering how the commercial came about, Mo’Nique has now provided the details.

In an interview with Complex, she said the opportunity came after Glover’s creative team reached out to her via her husband and manager, Sydney Hicks.

“Well, Fam Rothstein, who is one of Donald Glover’s teammates, and a sister named Sylvia, they called and spoke to my husband, who everybody knows is my manager,” she said. “They spoke to Sydney, and when I say it was a beautiful negotiation? It was the way it’s supposed to be done. It was professional people dealing with professional people, and we made something beautiful. I wish every deal and every phone call could be the one that came in from Fam Rothstein and Sister Sylvia. I wish they could be that way because it makes it so much easier.”

Mo’Nique continued, saying how respected she felt by Glover’s team. “I remember at the end of the shoot, I asked Donald if could I talk to him and his team, and it was one of those moments that brought tears to my eyes to say to those brothers, ‘This is how it’s supposed to be,’” she said. “And to treat a Black woman with such respect and honor, that for me goes down in my history book, to say there are still those out there that treat us with the respect we’re supposed to be treated with. They’re still out there and I know it seems like we got to dig deep, but dammit his name is Donald Glover.”

Let’s hope that the good time Mo’Nique had with Glover means there could be more projects between the two creatives in the future.

Donald Trump signs bill renewing NSA warrantless internet surveillance

January 22, 2018   Big Data
Donald Trump signs bill renewing NSA warrantless internet surveillance

(Reuters) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he signed into law a bill renewing the National Security Agency’s warrantless internet surveillance program, sealing a defeat for digital privacy advocates.

“Just signed 702 Bill to reauthorize foreign intelligence collection,” Trump wrote on Twitter, referring to legislation passed by the U.S. Congress that extends Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

The law renews for six years and with minimal changes the National Security Agency (NSA) program, which gathers information from foreigners overseas but incidentally collects an unknown amount of communications belonging to Americans.

The measure easily passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week despite mixed signals posted on Twitter by Trump and narrowly avoided a filibuster in the Senate earlier this week that split party lines. The measure had drawn opposition from a coalition of privacy-minded Democrats and libertarian Republicans.

In his tweet on Friday, Trump attempted to clarify why he signed the bill despite repeating an unsubstantiated claim that his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, ordered intelligence agencies to eavesdrop on Trump’s 2016 Republican presidential campaign.

“This is NOT the same FISA law that was so wrongly abused during the election,” Trump wrote. “I will always do the right thing for our country and put the safety of the American people first!”

Last September, the U.S. Justice Department said in a court filing that it had no evidence to support Trump’s claim about improper surveillance during the campaign.

Without Trump’s signature, Section 702 had been set to expire on Friday, though intelligence officials had said the surveillance program could continue to operate until April.

Under the law, the NSA is allowed to eavesdrop on vast amounts of digital communications from foreigners living outside the United States via U.S. companies like Facebook Inc, Verizon Communications Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google.

But the program also incidentally scoops up Americans’ communications, including when they communicate with a foreign target living overseas, and can search those messages without a warrant.

The White House, U.S. intelligence agencies and congressional Republican leaders have said the program is indispensable to national security, vital to protecting U.S. allies and needs little or no revision.

Privacy advocates say it allows the NSA and other intelligence agencies to grab data belonging to Americans in a way that represents an affront to the U.S. Constitution.
