Businesses and Employees Must Prepare for W-4 Changes Coming in January 2020

November 17, 2019   NetSuite
gettyimages 473687780 Businesses and Employees Must Prepare for W 4 Changes Coming in January 2020

Posted by Marc Holliday, Senior Product Marketing Manager

Changes are coming to one of the most ubiquitous tax forms, so taxpayers—and businesses— need to be prepared.

Most commonly referred to as Form W-4, the Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate determines the amount of Federal Income Taxes to be withheld from an employee’s paycheck. Employees fill it out when they start a new job, have a change in marital status, or some other material change in their financial situation occurs such as a spouse getting a new job or when adding dependents for birth or adoption.

The IRS encourages everyone to use the Tax Withholding Estimator to perform a quick paycheck checkup to protect against having too little tax withheld and facing an unexpected tax bill. This is even more important following the recent changes to the tax law for 2018 and beyond.

In December 2017, the Tax Cut and Jobs Act (TCJA) was signed into law and, after being delayed a year, changes to Form W-4 are going into effect for the 2020 tax year.

Let’s take a look at some of the biggest changes coming in 2020:

The elimination of withholding allowances on the form itself

Allowances are no longer used for the redesigned Form W-4 to increase transparency, simplicity and accuracy. In the past, the value of a withholding allowance was tied to the amount of the personal exemption. With the new law, you cannot claim personal exemptions or dependency exemptions. [1] Instead, allowances are represented as actual dollar amounts based on formulas found on the new form.

Changes to Employee Filing Status

Employees will still have three options to choose from in the new form, but they are slightly different. The options have gone from:

  • Single or married filing separately
  • Married filing jointly
  • Head of household.

To:

  • Single
  • Married
  • Married but withholding at a higher rate.

If no status is filled out, the default is single with no adjustments.

Impact on Employees

Employees who have filled out a W-4 in 2019 or before are not required to fill out a new W-4 in 2020.

Impact on Employers

Employers must be prepared for two scenarios for the adoption of the new form:

  • Employees hired after January 1, 2020 will need to fill out the new W-4
  • Anyone wishing to adjust their withholding after January 1, 2020 must use the new form

  Check your Payroll Solution

Businesses should ask if or when their payroll solution will be offering the new form. Make sure the same withholding tables are used for either the old or new form. Since employee’s who filled out a W-4 prior to 2020 do not have to fill out another form, it is important that the payroll system correctly account for the withholding and not flag an employee as not having filled out the form.

Employers should also look for a payroll solution that implements effective dating throughout the system. It should also provide the reporting and analytics to quickly identify missing W-4s and help identify which employees are subject to the new form or are compliant using the old form.

Automation & life-cycle management

Use Power BI API with service principal (Preview)

We’re thrilled to announce the support of authenticating to Power BI with service principal (also known as app-only authentication), now available in Public Preview.

Service principal can replace master user and help customers build a more robust solution when going to production:

  • Easier to create – applications can be registered automatically, and anyone with the appropriate permissions can add the new application to a security group allowed to use service principal.
  • No need to purchase a Power BI Pro license for a service principal (though it is recommended to have a user with Pro license who can access Power BI portal).

Read more about service principal in the blog announcement.

Schedule refresh API

Power BI enables Dataset owners to configure the refresh schedule. The refresh schedule refreshes the data according to the specified time and frequency. Learn more on configuring scheduled refresh.

The new REST API enables you to set a new refresh schedule or override the configuration of an existing schedule. You can also retrieve the schedule of a dataset with ‘get schedule refresh’ API.

This API is very useful for setting or updating schedules on many datasets because you can use a script rather than configuring each manually. The API can also be useful if you want to make automatic changes according to a specific trigger. For example, multiple refresh failures will disable the scheduled refresh. With the new API, you can enable the refresh schedule again without the need to do it manually.

Please note that this API is relevant for cached (import mode) or composite models only.

Schedule DirectQuery cache refresh

For datasets connected in a DirectQuery or Live Connection to the data source. However, Dashboard tiles pinned from reports that use DirectQuery, still cache the data and refresh it in a defined frequency. Now, you can use REST API to set the cache refresh of a DirectQuery or a live connection dataset.

Get Power BI Apps content

We added a new set of APIs that enable the users to get a list of their Power BI installed apps and their content. For now, the content includes only dashboards and reports.

Read more about it here.

Embed capabilities

Control all visual menu actions programmatically

Options and Context Menus APIs has been extended to provide full control for each visual in the report on built-in commands, and custom commands. Built-in commands can be hidden, or greyed-out per visual and the position of custom commands in the menus can be controlled as well.

Read more about it here and use the new ‘Insight to action’ showcase in the Microsoft Power BI Embedded Playground to experience the new feature.

Personalize reports with Themes API

Themes API allows you to apply a custom theme to your embedded report, such as corporate colors, seasonal coloring, or other custom styles. The custom theme can be defined using a JSON file like in the Power BI Service, and be applied when the report is loaded or changed in a loaded report.

Read more about it here and use the new ‘Personalize report design’ showcase in the Microsoft Power BI Embedded Playground to experience the new feature and get the code to implement it.

Clone visual API

Clone visual API allows you to make copies of an existing visual. It’s helpful when you want to create copies of one visual with different filters or different layout. It allows you also to bring visuals from another page of the report to the currently active page.

Read more about it here

Custom Visuals Rendering Events API

The 2.3 API introduces a new rendering events service providing the custom visual developer an ability to notify about rendering progress.

Use this API to ensure timely export to PPT and PDF execution of your visual.

This API improves the liability of the export to PPT and PDF features.

Future certification of custom visuals will require proper use of those rendering APIs, and please start using them if your visual is certified.

The new API contains three methods (started, finished or failed):

When the rendering is only going to start, the custom visual code calls to to indicate that rendering process was started.

If the rendering were  completed successfully, the custom visual code immediately calls the renderingFinished method notifying the listeners that this visual image is ready.

In case that a problem occurred during the rendering process, preventing the custom visual to successfully complete it, the custom visual code will call to renderingFailed method notifying the listener that the rendering process didn’t complete and also will provide an optional string for the cause of failure.

}

}

Local storage API

With the new Local Storage API, custom visual can request the host to save or load data from the browser’s storage.

Note that there is a separation of storage access, so that only visuals of the same type can access the data stored.

For more information, please check here.

Power BI Service and Mobile January 2019 Feature Summary

February 13, 2019   Self-Service BI

January was a feature-filled month for the Power BI team! We kicked off this new year by announcing some of the highly requested features by our community and couldn’t have wished for a better start. We hope you’re just as excited for what’s to come for the rest of 2019! To recap, here’s a list of all the features we shipped last month:

Secure-embed for Power BI reports

We made it extremely easy for you to embed Power BI reports to internal sites within your organization. With the new Embed option found in the File menu for each report, you can securely embed the content within internal portals, whether it’s hosted on-premises or cloud, without needing any advanced coding skills. The best part is that reports embedded in this way respect all item permissions set in Power BI and data security through row-level security (RLS). The Embed option also supports basic URL Filters and URL settings, which allow you to build experiences into your portals using rudimentary HTML and JavaScript skills. Learn more

Dataflows January updates

In November of last year, we announced the public preview of Power BI dataflows. The reception we received was overwhelming and we were pleased to see so many early adopters leveraging this within their organization. Based on your feedback, we continued to update the dataflows editor in January with three new capabilities:

  1. Data connectors – We added UI support for new connectors such as MySQL, Teradata, Azure Data Explorer, and improved many more. Check out the full list here.
  2. Native SQL queries– We added support to run native SQL database queries within Power BI – saving you a ton of time if you are already using them elsewhere.
  3. Power Query Online transformation support – We also added support for all transformations in the Power Query Online engine, which is particularly useful if you are already using Power BI Desktop.

Learn more for how to get started with Power BI dataflows for self-service data prep.

Personal bookmarks

We brought the power of bookmarking to report consumers in the service. With the release of personal bookmarks, we added the ability for end users to create their own set of bookmarks for the reports they have access to. Personal bookmarks allow users to capture various states of a report page (including filters, slicers, and state of visuals), give them friendly names, and later return to each state with just one click. In addition, users can also mark any bookmark as their default, so their favor bookmark gets applied each time they open the report. Check it out if you haven’t already or learn more.

Custom visuals monetization

Customer visuals are core to building effective and intuitive storytelling in Power BI. The community of developers has grown substantially since it’s launch in 2015 with hundreds of visuals available for download. In January, we announced the option for developers to monetize on the custom visuals they have built with in-app purchases. A visual with additional purchases is similar to any other in-app purchase add-ins (IAP) in the AppSource marked with a price tag of ‘Additional purchase may be required.’ IAP custom visuals can be downloaded for free by any user, however advanced features can be purchased for a cost. Learn more

On-premises data gateway management

To help you gain visibility and manage all the on-premises data gateways within your organization, we launched a public preview of the Data Gateway management feature in the Power Platform admin portal. Learn more

Power BI Report Server January update

We continued to make enhancements and shipped a new update for the Power BI Report Server in January. The update includes many highly anticipated features such as copy and pasting between pbix files, expand & collapse on matrix row header, and row-level security support. Try it out for yourself by downloading the latest update and check out the blog to learn more all the new capabilities with this release.

E-mail subscriptions time-based scheduling

To help users stay on top of their data, we further amplified the e-mail subscriptions feature in Power BI by introducing time-based scheduling for reports and dashboards. With this update, users can now setup a subscription to run daily, weekly, or if you’d prefer, only on certain days of the week. This new capability is available on all Power BI dashboards and reports, in both Pro and Premium subscriptions. Learn more

Report enhancements for mobile

For Power BI mobile apps, we further enhanced the report consumption experience by adding the following new capabilities:

  • Filter is available for landscape reports
  • Modern visual header support in mobile reports
  • Portrait report layout in tablets (iOS and Android)
  • Support for report query string

Download the Power BI mobile app on your device to try these out today or check out the What’s new page to learn more.

Presentation mode in Power BI Windows app

To help you leverage Power BI dashboard and reports when presenting, collaborating, and having day-to-day discussions at work, we added a new presentation mode capability in the Windows 10 app. Now, all you need to do is tap the full screen button in the menu bar of the app and this will take you into a view where you only have your visuals and data. Learn more

Release notes and BCDR FAQ

We use the Power BI section in the Business Application Release Notes to share details on what’s coming in the next three to six months.  These release notes are updated weekly with details on shipping dates, screenshots, and new announcements. Here’s what we disclosed recently:

Lastly, we also added a BCDR FAQ document to help understand how high availability & disaster recovery works in Power BI.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

February 5, 2019   Self-Service BI

Today we are happy to announce our January update of Power BI Report Server! This release has many highly anticipated features such as copy and pasting between pbix files, expand & collapse on matrix row header, and row-level security support. Read on to learn more about these and many other new capabilities we’ve added in this release.

Reporting

Modeling

Analytics

Other

Row-level security

This release includes support for one of the most highly requested features for Power BI Report Server – support for Row-level security in Power BI reports.  The feature works in a similar fashion to how it does in the Power BI service. Report authors can set up roles in Power BI Desktop and assign users or groups to those roles in the Power BI Report Server portal once they’ve published the report.  Unlike the Power BI service, however, users may not view content in a report until they have been assigned a role in Power BI Report Server.  We encourage you to read the supporting documentation to learn more about the feature in Power BI Report Server.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

Dot plot layout in scatter charts

We have a substantial update to our scatter chart in this release. You can now use categorical fields on the x-axis of your scatter chart, allowing you to create dot plots.

You don’t need to do anything special to enable this feature. Just add your categorical field to the x-axis and remove anything you may have in the Details bucket.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

You can this in combination with all of our formatting features, and of course it works with drilling on the x-axis.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

Let us know what you think and if there is anything you’d like to see added to this new visual layout!

Copy value and selection from table & matrix

We’ve heard from many of you that you need to copy data out of Power BI into other applications like Dynamics CRM, Excel, and even other Power BI reports. Our first feature related to this is the ability to copy a specific value or a selection of data from a table or matrix. You’ll be able to find both of these options on the right-click menu.

Copy value will add the unformatted value to your clipboard, and from there you can paste it wherever you want. For example, copy value from this cell in my table will add 32130 to my clipboard.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

Copy selection on the other hand will add a tabular version of all data currently selected in your table or matrix to the clipboard, including the row and column headers. The data will retain the data formatting that has been applied and subtotals are excluded. This option is very useful if you want to reuse a selection of data in another report in Excel for some quick calculations.

For example, if I have the entire Economy column selected in my matrix and pick Copy selection…

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

… I’ll get all this data in a tabular format when pasting into Excel.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

Note that when you have multiple measures in your matrix, they are always selected together, so you’ll always get both when copying selection. For example, copying the below selection…

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

… Will add the following to your clipboard.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

Built-in report theme options

In summer 2018, the Power BI Desktop team had several great interns who worked on some exciting features. The first of these intern projects to ship in the Power BI Desktop is a themes gallery in the Desktop that lets you pick between several built-in report themes.

You’ll be able to see these new theme options under the Switch Theme button in the Home ribbon tab. In addition to the default theme, you can now pick between 7 new options.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

All you need to do is pick the theme of your choice and it will automatically apply its color palette to all your visuals using the default color palette. There is now also a quick link the theme gallery on our community site if you want to try out a theme built by our great community!

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

This project was done by our intern Chelsie Eiden, thank you Chelsie for your great work!

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

Search in filter cards

We’ve had search in our slicers since our June 2016 update, and now with this update, we’ve added it into our basic filter cards as well. This functionality is much loved and used in our slicers, and we think this is a welcomed update to our filters as well.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

Expand & collapse matrix row headers

We are very excited to announce the release of one of the most requested visual features, the ability to expand and collapse individual row headers.

There are two ways you can expand row headers. The first is through the right-click menu. You’ll see options to expand the specific row header you clicked on, the entire level or everything down to the very last level of the hierarchy. You have similar options for collapsing row headers as well.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

You can also add +/- buttons to the row headers through the formatting pane under the row headers card. By default, the icons will match the formatting of the row header, but you can customize the icons’ color and size separately if you want.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

Once the icons are turned on, they work similarly to the icons from PivotTables in Excel.

Power BI Report Server Update – January 2019

The expansion state of the matrix will save with your report. Conditional formatting will only apply to the inner most visible level of the hierarchy. Note that this expand/collapse experience is not currently supported when connecting to AS servers older than 2016 or MD servers.

Copy & paste between Desktop files

Another frequent request we’re delivering is the ability to copy visuals between .pbix files. With this release, you can now copy a visual either through the visual’s context menu or through the standard Ctrl+C keyboard shortcut and paste it into another report through Ctrl+V.
