Cedric The Entertainer-Produced Dramedy, Starring D.L. Hughley, Titled ‘Johnson’ Lands On Bounce TV

December 31, 2020   Humor
Cedric The Entertainer Produced Dramedy, Starring D.L. Hughley, Titled ‘Johnson’ Lands On Bounce TV

Created by Deji LaRay, the series comes from A Bird & A Bear Entertainment, along with LaRay and Thomas Q. Jones’ Midnight Train Productions.

Bounce TV has set the showrunners and lead cast for its dramedy series Johnson.

The show follows life-long best friends — all with the same last name of Johnson — as they navigate love, friendship, heartbreak and personal growth.

Led by D.L Hughley, the cast also includes Thomas Q. Jones, series creator Deji LaRay, Philip Smithey, Derrex Brady, Khalilah Joi, Terri Abney and Rosa Acosta. Jones and LaRay serve as showrunners.

Johnson has begun filming in Atlanta, where the show also takes place. The dramedy is set to premiere in the summer of 2021.

Created by LaRay, Johnson is produced by Cedric the Entertainer and Eric Rhone’s A Bird & A Bear Entertainment, along with LaRay and Jones’ Midnight Train Productions. Along with Jones and LaRay, Cedric the Entertainer, and Rhone and Reesha L. Archibald will also executive produce. Knoko Chapple is producer.

“Black people are not monolithic and we as Black men can be very complex. We want to peel back those layers on the show and give women an inside look at why men do and say the things we do,” said LaRay. “While our lead characters are specifically speaking from the Black man’s point of view, they truly represent all men. Our goal is for men and women to have a better understanding of each other when they watch the show.”

Added Jones, “We created this series because we weren’t seeing anything like it on television. Insecure and Sex and the City and other shows capture the beautiful essence of friendship among women, but it’s harder to distill that for men.”

Jones, a former NFL running back, has appeared in film and television shows such as Straight Outta Compton, P-Valley, Luke Cage, Shameless, Being Mary Jane, Runaway Island and A Violent Man, which he also executive produced.

Bounce, a broadcast and multi-platform entertainment network that targets African Americans, is owned by Scripps.

Business and Basketball: Advice from Earvin “Magic” Johnson

May 7, 2018   NetSuite

Magic1 Business and Basketball: Advice from Earvin “Magic” Johnson

By Barney Beal, Content Director

NCAA champion, NBA champion, NBA Hall of Famer, businessman, co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers – Earvin “Magic” Johnson has seen success everywhere his career has taken him. He shared some of the secrets to his success, and occasional failures in an engaging and thought-provoking address at SuiteWorld18.

Magic’s basketball career helped set the stage for his success in business, he told attendees. After taking Everett High School in East Lansing, Mich. from a losing tradition to state champion, he went on to Michigan State and won a national championship over Larry Bird’s Indiana State team, still the most watched NCAA championship in history. From there it was on the NBA, more match ups with Bird and five NBA titles.

It was basketball — the discipline, the work ethic, the drive – that established Magic’s personal brand. But when it came time to embark on the next chapter of his journey, as a business man, he found some new challenges.

“When I first started out, they held me being a basketball player against me,” he said. “They wanted the autograph and the picture but they didn’t want to give me the money. So, at first I was first funding everything with my own money.”

Shortly after his retirement from the NBA, Magic asked team owner Jerry Buss for the phone numbers of season ticket holders, some of the leading CEOs and businessmen in LA and asked them out for lunch to pick their brains. Unsurprisingly, they all agreed to have lunch with Magic. Here’s some of what he learned from them and from his own experiences.

Your competitor can make you better
Knowing that Larry Bird was out putting up 2,000 shots a day in the offseason, Magic felt he had to put up 2,000 shots per day.

“Larry made me a better basketball player, he made me a better man,” Magic said. “Your competitor can make you better.”

Know your customer
One of Magic’s earliest and most successful projects was to build a movie theater in urban LA. Conventional wisdom was that a movie theater wouldn’t work in minority, urban areas, but recognizing the $ 3 trillion in spending power of minorities, he pushed ahead, Magic said. The theater was one of the 10 fastest growing theaters the country the next year.
Magic found similar success building 160 Starbucks over a six-year period in partnership with Starbucks CEO Howard Schulz.

“The headline was, there’s no way minorities will pay $ 3 for a cup of coffee,” Magic said.

Yet the $ 4.59 per capita sales at his urban locations were higher than the $ 4.51 at Starbucks’ suburban locations.

“We will, we just don’t quite know what a scone is,” Magic joked. “I know my customer. All of you have to know your customer. Speak to that customer and over deliver to that customer.”

Regular SWOT Analysis
Magic conducts a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis on his business and himself every six months. It was two of his failures that helped to convince him of the need for self-evaluation, he said. In 1984, Larry Bird’s Celtics defeated Magic and the Lakers in the NBA Finals, and Magic didn’t perform up to his own expectations.

“My rival is pouring champagne over his head and I’m crying in the locker room,” Magic said. “I had to take a SWOT of myself and I learned I wasn’t as good as I thought I was.”

Another one of his self-proclaimed failures was also related to Bird. When Magic realized he and Bird had the highest selling jerseys in the NBA, he asked the commissioner why he wasn’t seeing any of the money. A clause in the collective bargaining agreement meant the NBA got to keep all the proceeds. So, Magic set up his own stores selling hats, t-shirts and other goods. It failed miserably.

“I bought all these hats and t-shirts that I thought people would like,” Magic said. “Turned out I bought what I liked.”

Don’t Fall in Love with Anything

“If something comes along at the right price, I sell,” Magic said. “Be open to change. The market changes on us month to month, year to year. You have to be open to change your business.”

That even goes for the Lakers. When Magic saw that Lakers star Kobe Bryant was on the downside of his career with little in the way of talent to replace him, he sold his stake in the team. He turned around and, with an ownership group, bought the Los Angeles Dodgers for $ 2 billion, the largest amount ever paid for a professional sports team. The television deal the group signed afterwards came out at $ 9 billion and the 300 acres of land that went with the sale is now worth $ 2 billion, Magic said.

Parting Words of Wisdom
And the final piece of advice from Magic?

“Hire people like yourself,” he said. “I’m a worker I hire workers. I also hire people that are smarter than I am. I set the vision, they buy into that vision and then we work until we get it done.”

Bill Cosby Countersues Beverly Johnson, Denies Drugging Model!

December 24, 2015   Humor

UPDATED, 5:03 PM:  The strategy of Bill Cosby’s new lawyers is becoming clear: attack the accusers. With dozens and dozens of women alleging that the comedian sexually assaulted or drugged them over the decades, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan today went after Beverly Johnson for defamation. This comes less than a week after Cosby’s team did the same thing to seven women in federal court in Massachusetts.

Bill Cosby Countersues Beverly Johnson, Denies Drugging Model!Today’s filing against model and actress Johnson in Los Angeles Superior Court (read it here) seeks punitive damages and an injunction preventing her from “continuing to publish her defamatory statements.” Johnson said, initially in a Vanity Fairarticle and in subsequent interviews, that Cosby drugged her with spiked cappucino at his New York home during the 1980s. It claims she “is no stranger to making salacious allegations even before her false allegations about Mr.Cosby. She previously made allegations of abuse against two of her boyfriends, neither of which resulted in charges or any finding of liability.” It adds that Johnson “has repeated her lies about Mr. Cosby drugging her to every media publication, newspaper, magazine or TV show that will hear her,” including The View, Dr. Phil and Good Morning America.

PREVIOUSLY, December 14: The once-beloved comedian today says that Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Barbara Bowman, Joan Tarshis, and Angela Leslie cost him his comeback. In a court documents Monday, the widely accused Bill Cosby asserts he “neither drugged nor sexually assaulted” the seven women. In fact, Cosby now is suing them back in federal court in Massachusetts for a wide range of damages and injunctions — including publicly “retracting and correcting” their accusations of sexual assault. And he is convinced it was their words and actions that cost him high-profile gigs on NBC and Netflix.
