Power Apps Plays Crucial Role in Pandemic

September 22, 2020   Microsoft Dynamics CRM

I get admittedly jazzed about Power Apps – Microsoft’s suite of apps, services, connectors and data platform. It is truly impressive technology that provides a rapid application development environment. This allows organizations  to quickly customize how they receive, process and leverage massive amounts of data at an enterprise level. Now consider 2020 and the need to rapidly move data in an ever-evolving landscape. It probably won’t surprise you Microsoft and Power Apps played a key role in COVID-19 data collection and response.

NO TIME TO WASTE

Very early in the pandemic, Microsoft developed the Hospital Emergency Response Solution, a Power Apps application that monitored hospitals’ bed capacity and key resources like personal protective equipment, ventilators and other supplies. Needless to say, this data was invaluable to the healthcare system and a multitude of other entities on the frontlines of managing the pandemic, including State and Local governments. Microsoft then developed its Regional Government Emergency Response and Monitoring solution built on Microsoft Power Apps Portal and Microsoft Power BI.

The solution gave healthcare providers and public health departments a comprehensive view of key data points like number of cases, hospitalizations, bed capacity, equipment usage, supplies, and staff – at the Local, State and Regional levels. Healthcare workers across the region could now easily report crucial data into a centralized platform. And dashboards featuring critical data could now be updated and viewed in nearly real-time.

And all this innovation before the end of May, thanks to Power Apps rapid application development environment.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE

The Regional Government Emergency Response and Monitoring solution features essentially a two-pronged approach. First, there is a portal for healthcare providers and regional agencies to update data like bed capacity and supply counts. Hospital administrators can also access related dashboards and reports. Next, regional users (like public health agencies, emergency responders, fire departments and regional command centers) can leverage the data – delivered via dashboards, heat maps and reports – to better understand scope, challenges and deployment needs. You can view an overview of the app at this link.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU

It’s simple. The pace at which Microsoft was able to deploy such a massive, crucial, breakneck undertaking in the early days of the health crisis underscores the beautiful symbiosis between need and innovation. Almost certainly, your organization will never experience anything close to these life and death dynamics. But how exciting is it to know that, with Microsoft’s Power Apps, you have exceptional, powerful, game-changing technology ready to turn things around on a dime.

Now you know why I get so jazzed about this stuff.

Get User Security Role Name from context in Dynamics 365 CE

April 20, 2020   Microsoft Dynamics CRM

Microsoft Dynamics 365 CE/CRM now has a more streamlined method to get the running users security role name without having to make a client-side API call. In the spring of 2020 there has been an update to the SDK to mark the deprecation of userSettings.securityRoles. It has been replaced with userSettings.roles.

Get User Security Role Name from context in Dynamics 365 CE

Get User Security Role Name from context in Dynamics 365 CE

userSettings.roles provides not only the security role guids from the global context, but the security role names as well.

A common design pattern in use today is to enable/disable or hide/show client-side form attributes as a part of controlling a business logic form flow. This has been achieved with a JavaScript WebResource in several different patterns. The challenge is that quite a few patterns can cause poor client-side performance, especially in high latency environments. Here are some example conversations from the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Forum community on the subject:

If you are fortunate enough to have engaged with a Dynamics 365 CE/CRM DSE or a Microsoft in a Performance Delivery, you may have been provided a sample JavaScript pattern using browser caching that alleviated unnecessary Web API calls.

Hiccup Note: While writing this blog I uncovered a bug where the name values are incorrect when an Owner Team is providing additional security roles. There is already a bug in place and is targeting the 4.4 train (end of May 2020) release. In mean time feel test on a development environment in preparation for the bug fix release. I will be updating this blog to remove this statement one the the fix has reached North America. Please check back and/or follow this blog post for updates.

So let’s take a look at a JavaScript sample that uses the new userSettings.roles

Get User Security Role Name from context in Dynamics 365 CE

Add a JavaScript web resource.

Add the web resource as a reference on a Case form.

Register CaseForm.FromOnload on the Case form Onload event.

Publish the changes.

Identify a test user with security roles for testing.

Open a Case record.

Now we can inspect the Developer Tools (F12) in the browser (example here in Microsoft Edge based on Chromium). Note: you might need to refresh the form with a Shift+F5 to replay the form load.

We see we get the global context and inspect userSettings.roles by hovering the cursor over roles.

What Is HR’s Role In A High-Performance Culture?

April 7, 2020   BI News and Info
What Is HR’s Role In A High Performance Culture?

Operating within a forever-changing and fast-paced context full of disruption and challenges, the role of HR has become more relevant and important than ever. Whether it be the perennial challenge of having the right people in the right place with the right skills, the rise of compliance, or the changing preferences of the workforce, the relevance of HR has never been higher.

Organizations today need to become as agile as a startup. They are faced with disruption every single day; loyalty isn’t what it once was, so having “a finger on the pulse” to ensure the organization is in a position to execute has become a challenge that HR must be at the forefront of.

In simple terms, HR must become a rigorous facilitator of change and a disruptor within the organization. However, that doesn’t mean it is all about innovation and new ways of working; it is also about reminding an organization that executing the basic fundamentals can also result in great success.

Every organization has a strategy that needs to be executed. The collective skills, talents, and brilliance of every element of the workforce needs to be leveraged to help the organization execute and ultimately succeed with its strategic goals.

This is where HR needs to bring its design capability, its ability to understand the nuances of human beings, to reimagine an experience with simplified processes that ultimately bring collective “clarity” in terms of what people need to do (goals/objectives) and “standards” in terms of how well people are executing against those goals – infusing leaders with the confidence and capability to deliver meaningful, relevant, and frequent feedback to ensure that everyone is clear on performance impact and has the ability to take corrective action if they are not. Leaders have a fundamental role to play in creating the climate and conditions for their team members to perform at their very best every day irrespective of their role.

Every human being requires a number of things to happen on a daily basis to enable them to feel engaged, motivated, valued, and fulfilled. All employees seek meaning and purpose in their work, and getting recognition for their efforts is still one of the most important pre-requisites for job seekers. A thank you does indeed go a long way.

As James March of MIT commented, “Neither success nor change requires dramatic action. The conventional routine activities that produce most organizational change require ordinary people to do ordinary things in a competent way.” Executing the basic fundamentals brilliantly every day results in the “needle being moved” for employees and organizations.

In these turbulent times, HR professionals are wise to recognize The Importance Of Understanding The True Nature Of Stress.

The Role of CRM in Digital Transformation

July 17, 2019   Microsoft Dynamics CRM
crmnav The Role of CRM in Digital Transformation

We are working with a number of companies in the midst of digital transformation, helping them to use Microsoft Dynamics CRM to build better and more consistent relationships with their customers.

Whether you’re B2B or B2C, your customers are now highly skilled when it comes to technology. In this demanding environment, CRM technology like Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement should come to the fore.

How does Microsoft Dynamics CE support digital transformation?

There are endless possibilities. Let’s look at marketing, sales and customer service, in particular.

  • Digital transformation and marketing

The marketing app within Microsoft Dynamics 365 enables you to reach customers in a more sophisticated way.

By using Dynamics to gather information about your customers, their interests and their problems, you can create tailored marketing programmes which target their most pressing questions. You can also manage and monitor social channels more effectively and make better use of email marketing because of the ability to understand and predict requirements. This can dramatically improve the ROI on your marketing spend. You can see what resonates most with your audience, and reduce the amount you spend on traditional marketing which is hard to quantify, like print advertising and direct mail.

  • Digital transformation and customer service

The customer service app within Microsoft Dynamics 365 will also support digital transformation. By collecting the right customer information, service teams have a rounded view of an individual’s interaction with your business and can use these insights to serve customers better.

When managed properly, it’s possible for the service teams to be more proactive, providing information to customers when they need it most, rather than waiting for a query to be raised. This reduces the amount of time your teams spend on the phone dealing with the same issues, and has a knock-on effect on customer satisfaction.

  • Digital transformation and sales

Your sales team can use Microsoft Dynamics 365 to improve prospecting and business development by making it quicker and easier to assess where a prospect is in their buying journey, and to tailor communication and resource accordingly. It’s also easier for you to track and manage your sales pipeline, with information recorded systematically and all in one place.

Announcing the New Viewer Role for Power BI Workspaces

June 25, 2019   Self-Service BI

We’re excited to announce we’ve started to roll-out the Viewer role for the new workspace experience, perfect for users who need to view content within workspaces without the ability to modify it.

The feature roll-out has started and should complete for commercial cloud customers 6/29/2019.

The Viewer role gives a read-only experience to its users. They can view dashboards, reports, or workbooks in the workspace, but can’t browse the datasets or dataflows. Use the Viewer role wherever you would previously use a classic workspace set to “Members can only view Power BI content”

If your workspace is in Premium, users who don’t have a Pro license can view the workspace in the workspaces list, navigate to the workspace, and view the content without getting a Pro Trial prompt.

The Viewer role has several benefits:

  • It is easier to navigate in Power BI for users with read-only access.
  • It helps smaller teams that want stakeholders to have read-only access to all workspace content, but do not want to publish and maintain a Power BI app for this purpose.
  • Any row-level security (RLS) you have defined on the datasets in the Power BI workspace is enforced for users who only have the Viewer role.
  • You can stop using classic workspaces based on Office 365 Groups if you needed the Members to only view Power BI content option, known as “read-only workspaces”.

Let’s look at the experiences. When you grant access in a new workspace experience workspace, you’ll see a new role called Viewer in the roles option.

Screenshot of Power BI new workspace experience Access pane showing the Viewer assigned to a security group.

Users with the Viewer role get a read-only experience in the workspace. They can view dashboards, reports, or workbooks in the workspace. They can’t browse the datasets or dataflow or edit content in the workspace. This matches the experience users get in a classic workspace when they are set to “Members can only view Power BI content”.

Screenshot showing the workspace content list experience for users who have Viewer role.

One important difference with the Viewer role is how licensing is enforced. If the workspace is in a Power BI Premium capacity, users who have the Viewer role but do not have a Pro license can now navigate directly to the workspace and view the content. This helps smaller teams that want stakeholders to have read-only access to all workspace content, but do not want to publish and maintain a Power BI app for this purpose. It’s a really nice usability and efficiency improvement.

If the workspace is not in Power BI Premium or if the user without a Pro license has a higher privilege role, like Admin, Member, or Contributor, they will continue to get the standard Upgrade to Power BI Pro license dialog.

Screenshot showing the upgrade to Power BI Pro dialog.

The Viewer role grants only the Read permission to items in the workspace. This means that any Row-Level-Security you have set on the datasets in the workspace applies to users who only have the Viewer role. If you want these users to Analyze in Excel, or export data from the datasets in the workspace, also give them Build permission on the appropriate datasets.

Current And Future Role Of Wearables In Healthcare

June 4, 2019   SAP
Current And Future Role Of Wearables In Healthcare

When you think about the role of technology in healthcare, the first things that probably come to mind are new treatment methods, fancy diagnostic equipment, and so on. However, we are likely standing on the threshold of a complete transformation of the healthcare industry by something that, at a glance, looks much humbler: wearables that merely provide doctors with information about their patients.

There are already plenty of medical applications for wearables, and the market is projected to grow to $ 60 billion by 2023. Let’s take a look at what this means for the industry.

Personalization

John Hancock, one of the most prominent North American insurers, stated in late 2018 that it intends to stop selling traditional life insurance and will instead adopt interactive policies that track fitness and health data via wearable devices and smartphones. This means the health status of every client will be tracked and considered when the company determines the risks associated with the individual’s lifestyle and habits. Clients with habits associated with shorter lifespans (e.g., smoking, low levels of physical activity, unhealthy diet) will have to pay higher premiums. In the long run, this affects not just the insurance industry but healthcare as well, as clients are incentivized to adopt healthier lifestyles, thus decreasing the strain on healthcare.

Remote patient monitoring

While a small smartwatch isn’t as accurate as a full-scale electrocardiograph with 12 electrodes, it has a significant advantage: you can wear it all day, every day. Measuring pulse throughout the day across a wide range of activities is far from the only health measurement a smartwatch can provide. The more data these devices gather, the greater the possibility for healthcare to establish a preventive model that interprets patient data and calls for treatment before a crisis.

Early diagnosis

The wide adoption of wearables that track patients’ health stats enables the collection of huge amounts of data that can be used to establish patterns with the help of AI and machine learning. The system will be able to use the data collected from each individual to predict potential health problems before they arise, allowing for cheaper and more effective preventive measures, as opposed to treating a disease when it is in full swing.

Medication adherence

Patients tend to forget or forgo taking their medications for many reasons. Wearables can alert people when it is time to take their meds, track when they take them, and inform doctors when they don’t adhere to the prescribed regimen. As a result, medical professionals can monitor how strictly their patients follow instructions at home.

More complete information

Normally, doctors have very limited information about their cases. They have to rely on what patients report about their symptoms and the onset of the illness (data which is often incomplete or imprecise) and the patients’ medical history based on their previous interactions (which, again, may be limited). A wearable device collects all of a patient’s data in real time, it doesn’t make mistakes or forget to report an important symptom. As a result, a doctor gets an exhaustive report on the patient’s condition over time and can make a more thorough analysis, leading to more informed and optimal decision-making.

Cost savings

Widescale adoption of expensive wearables and accompanying tech may look like a significant investment, but it can save healthcare millions of dollars in the long run. These devices allow doctors to track their patients’ conditions at a distance, often eliminating the need to transfer them to a medical facility. Recognizing symptoms at an early stage allows for less expensive treatments.

These applications for wearables in the healthcare industry are still in their infancy, but we are likely to see this market grow at a breakneck pace in the coming years.

The Vital Role of Customer Service in the Sharing Economy

May 9, 2019   CRM News and Info

By 2022, the sharing economy is expected to double, reaching US$ 40 Billion, according to Juniper Research. Pioneers such as Airbnb and Uber are now global titans, taking in billions of dollars per year. From sharing furniture to sharing clothing, every industry seems to be trying to make its way into the lucrative sharing business.

With the market becoming more saturated with products, how do companies differentiate themselves from their competitors?

The answer: customer service. By 2020, customers
will give more weight to customer service than to the price or product itself, a recent survey suggests. Even today, 86 percent of customers say they would pay more for higher customer service, and 67 percent claim poor customer service is the reason they left a certain company.

In the current climate, where every retailer seems to be trending toward a more collaborative environment, customer service should be treated as a valuable tool to make the customer feel comfortable, catered to, and coming back for more.

The ‘Assuring Touch’

With the sharing economy expanding into nearly every industry, providing the best customer service becomes essential. This is especially important for niche industries — where customers may want to try something that they might never have done before. In situations like this, the customer needs expert advice in order to provide assurance that they’re getting the exact product they need in order to have the best possible experience.

Curation of the product to fit the specific customer is a great way
to manufacture a positive customer experience. It doesn’t make sense to use an outdated one-size-fits-all approach. Customer service needs to be flexible and to take into account what the customers ask for, in order to recommend the correct products.

Take the ski industry, for instance: Those who rent equipment likely will not have very much experience about the specific items they need, making customer service their only recourse. For example, a quality customer service representative would recommend what to wear in various weather conditions, or what kind of gear would work best for an individual. In this case, to give vital recommendations is essential to make sure customers have the best possible experience.

Furthermore — and especially when goods are shipped to the customer —
quality assurance that the product will be in good shape when it arrives is equally important.

When someone plans to access the sharing economy, many times it is for a major event, and they have skepticism that everything will go right. Making sure they know that their needs will be met will cultivate a positive relationship with the client.

Customer Feedback to Uphold Company Values

When the actual product choice depends on the particular client’s interests, it becomes more essential to know how the customer felt about the service.

For a business in the sharing economy, it’s important to understand both what the company does right and wrong in order to adapt for the future. Getting feedback in the form of
reviews or personal calls could prove vital in figuring out how to improve your service and provide the best experience for your customers in the future.

Perhaps the most beneficial aspect of the sharing economy is the sheer diversity in potential services. Contractors and gig workers provide diverse benefits, allowing customers to customize their experience by choosing the specific product they want. Think Airbnb hosts, who customize their rooms in order to fit a specific customer niche.

Of course, there is a downside to this: In the sharing economy, customers interact mostly with contractors, as opposed to actual employees of the company. While they may not be employees of the company, constractors still need to uphold the company’s values. For this reason, it is essential that they understand and support the company’s culture, as they act as the face of the company in the customer’s eyes.

Customer reviews let the company know if a contractor is the right fit to represent the company. Of course, if a customer has a bad experience with a contractor, positive customer service can go a long way toward achieving damage control.

For example, Uber has suffered reputational damage from controversies over
drivers harassing customers. The best scenario would be to have screening processes in place to make sure the right people are working with the company from the start. That said, being able to hear feedback complaints from customers in order to keep the contractors in check is an important part of cultivating a positive image.

For large companies, it’s hard to ensure that every contractor adheres to company values, but reacting to negative workers — and banning them from service as you would fire any employee — will go a long way toward improving customer trust.

Turning Customers Into PR Advocates

The best part about having satisfied customers in the sharing economy is the fact that they endlessly want to share their positive experiences with their family and friends. They essentially become free PR wherever they go.

Traditional marketing works by segmenting potential clients into sales funnels, but in the sharing economy,
people are much more influenced by reviews, other online feedback, and positive comments from people they know.

Word-of-mouth plays a significant role in the development of a business in the sharing economy — especially for young companies. This
is reflected in the numbers: 63 percent of sharers said they found the site through a personal recommendation, and 91 percent would recommend their last sharing service to a friend. This is why it is essential to provide the best possible customer service, as negative word-of-mouth could prove disastrous.

Customer service plays a vital role in virtually every company, but in no industry is customer service as important as in the sharing economy. While there is nothing wrong with dreaming of starting the next Airbnb, it’s important to remember that customer service is the foundation of successful businesses in the sharing economy.
