Silly Season: Room Rater creates aesthetic scale for Skype/Zoom backgrounds

Room Rater @ratemyskyperoom “The ‘J’ of Room Rater’s ‘J & C’ drew the short straw on this one. We find this room to be slightly painful, titillating and possibly fun. The only appropriate rating is 2/10.”

Room Rater is now being used as a throwaway line for happy-talk television, so this Twitter site that rates the backgrounds we use for our Skype/Zoom conversations now draws our attention. The reality is that most backgrounds are just that, even as their detail is a measure of the quality of the discourse.

The pair of folks ranking them on a 10/10 scale at least allows us some sense of taste in a tasteless symptom of COVID-19. “Covid Cabin” will be a meme.

Green Light for TIBCO in the 2020 Formula One Season

February 21, 2020   TIBCO Spotfire
TIBCOMercedesPAMG 696x465 Green Light for TIBCO in the 2020 Formula One Season

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Attention all race fans! We are pleased to announce that we have renewed our partnership with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team for the 2020 race season. This will be the fourth year we have partnered with the F1 powerhouse, providing them with Connected Intelligence-driven solutions to continue to lead with innovation, teamwork, and leadership. This year, Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 will expand its TIBCO footprint with even more solutions to help it maintain its competitive advantage.

Quick hood check for those burgeoning fans

The team’s modern-day race dominance began 10 years ago, and this year, it is competing for its seventh Constructors’ Championship, consecutively winning the coveted title since 2014. Last season, drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas won a combined 15 out of 21 races (over 70 percent), 10 pole positions, nine 1-2 finishes, 32 podiums, and nine fastest laps. When compared to the competition, Bottas (who finished second) and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen (who finished third) had a 48-point difference in the Drivers’ Championship, while the team won the Constructors’ Championship with a 235-point lead over Ferrari.

Rocking the new look

On February 14, the team launched its car for the 2020 season, the Mercedes-AMG F1 W11 EQ Performance. The “W 11” represents the eleventh Mercedes-made F1 car since the Silver Arrows returned as a constructor in 2010. “EQ Performance” alludes to the car’s hybrid system, bearing the same designation as all feature Mercedes-AMG performance hybrids.

Made for speed and strength

The car is comprised of an astounding 10,000+ individual parts. In terms of the design, regulations indicate that all of the cars need to have a ‘shark fin’ on the engine cover to house the drivers’ numbers, making it easier for fans to distinguish between each team’s two machines. Additionally, the first 50mm of front wing end plates have to be made purely of carbon fiber to avoid tire punctures in the event of a collision. The car will undergo preseason testing at Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya this week.

Fans will see the addition of two new races on the calendar: the Vietnamese Grand Prix and the Dutch Grand Prix. On the flip side, with a limited number of races, something had to give and unfortunately, race fans won’t see the teams battle it out in Hockenheim this year. This will be the first Grand Prix in Vietnam, and the first Grand Prix in the Netherlands since 1985.

Milestone celebration alert

This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the FIA Formula One World Championship™. Over the last 70 years, 33 drivers have been world champion, 108 have won Grands Prix, while 764 drivers and over 150 teams have taken part. But this year also marks the last year before the rules and regulations will get totally shaken up and the sport reimagined for the new decade.

Looking to 2020, Hamilton and Bottas are revved up and ready to take to the track. Hamilton rivals Michael Schumacher as Formula One’s most-decorated driver, and he has the chance to exceed Schumacher’s stats and championship wins. As for Bottas, he gained momentum in 2019, winning four Grand Prix and placing second behind Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship. That said, everyone will be looking to Bottas (or any of the other drivers) as he goes head-to-head with Hamilton for that coveted championship.

TIBCO’s fourth year of the partnership will continue to support the team’s business reinvention and operational excellence with a number of Connected Intelligence solutions allowing it to connect seamlessly, unify intelligently, and predict confidently.

Learn more about how we help the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team drive innovation through continuous innovation and collaboration to leverage cutting-edge technology, giving them a competitive advantage.

Jussie Smollett Could Return To Finale Season Of ‘Empire’

January 4, 2020   Humor
Jussie Smollett Could Return To Finale Season Of ‘Empire’

The sixth and final season of the Fox musical drama Empire has continued on without the inclusion of Jussie Smollett, who played Jamal Lyon. However, in an interview with TV Line, showrunner Brett Mahoney revealed that discussions are underway for a possible Smollett return.

“It would be weird in my mind to end this family show and this family drama of which he was such a significant part of without seeing him,” Mahoney said. “It’s fair to say it’s being discussed, but there’s no plan as of yet to bring him back. There’s been no decision made.”

For those unfamiliar, Smollett was written out at the end of the fifth season following accusations of filing a false police report. The report claimed he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack in Chicago in January. Charges were eventually dropped against Smollett in March.

Empire‘s midseason finale aired on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.

This Holiday Season, Be Thankful For A Great Customer Experience

November 21, 2019   BI News and Info
This Holiday Season, Be Thankful For A Great Customer Experience

Is it just me or has Black Friday turned into Black November?

Before the pumpkins rotted, before Halloween candy was devoured, before the ghosts and ghouls were put back in the attic, we were already deluged with Black Friday adverts and mailers.

Of course, this onslaught of promotion is entirely predictable. The fact is, no retailer can afford to sit out Black Friday – not when it’s the day that pulls them out of the red (in accounting terms) and into the black. For retailers, Black Friday can literally make their year.

More than a day

Traditionally, we think of Black Friday as the day after Thanksgiving here in the United States – when throngs of people flock to the malls. Increasingly, though, the term is being broadened to refer to the full five-day period that starts with Thanksgiving Day and runs through Cyber Monday.

The cyber part of the extended Black Friday shopping weekend continues to show its strength. Yes, you can still expect jammed parking lots at your mall of choice, but by some estimates at least, brick and mortar store shopping on Black Friday was slightly down last year. On the other hand, online sales for Black Friday more than compensated, jumping 23.6% from 2017 to hit $ 6.2 billion.

Indeed, online sales now must be seen as the main show for the Black Friday weekend. Take Cyber Monday, for example. Once the laggard in terms of sales, Cyber Monday won the weekend in 2018 with a $ 7.9 billion haul that weighed in as the highest U.S. e-commerce sales day in history.

The idea of Black Friday (or something akin to it) is not exclusive to the US, of course. In the UK, shoppers spent £8.29 billion during the Black Friday weekend. In France, they spent £5.99 billion.

Neither is it limited to Christmas. In China, the big shopping day comes on Singles Day – which is sort of like Valentine’s Day on steroids. This year, Singles Day broke records again, raking in $ 38.4 billion. Reportedly, Alibaba reached $ 1 billion in sales in its first 68 seconds and $ 13 billion in its first hour!

Toward thankful customers

So yes, there is a lot at stake for shopping days (or weekends) like Black Friday. But let’s remember that here in the US it all starts with Thanksgiving, which isn’t about shopping but about … well, giving thanks.

Thankfulness is a powerful human emotion, and companies that can engender it in their customers are likely to keep those customers over the long term. But how do you move forward? It all comes down to delivering a great customer experience.

Keep in mind, though, that a great customer experience doesn’t end when you place the order. In fact, it doesn’t even start there. Great customer experiences are woven into the entire end-to-end process of designing, making, and delivering the products you sell.

Companies should create experiences that make their customers want to say thank you in the following ways:

Thanks for thinking of me with a great design experience:

Great customer experiences start by designing and manufacturing products that the customer actually wants. What a concept! But understanding what customers want can be difficult. Leading companies are mixing data from sales and social media with advanced analytics and machine learning to detect shifts in demand patterns and customer preferences. To meet these preferences, companies are also designing highly configurable products that make it easier to make exactly what customers want.

Thanks for making it easy for me with a great ordering experience:

With so much of sales shifting online, companies need to find ways to make ordering as simple as possible. This starts with understanding who the customer actually is, remembering their past interactions, and prepopulating ordering data as much as possible to make the checkout process painless. Nowhere is this more important than with mobile. Customers want tap-tap-buy capabilities on their phones – and customers who get it will keep coming back.

Thanks for bringing it to me when and where I want it with a great delivery experience:

According to Adobe Analytics, 2018 saw a 73% increase in customers choosing the BIOPIS (buy online, pick up in store) option – with 64% making a further in-store purchase while picking up. So, what’s the downside of making it as easy as possible for customers to get what they want when they want it? I can’t see one. But to get there, companies need omnichannel visibility of customers, orders, inventory, availability logistics carriers, and more. Integration across all phases of operations is the key.

Thanks for remembering me with a great after-sales service experience:

Remaining attentive after the sale is critical for maintaining customer loyalty. Wherever possible, leading companies are using IoT sensors and greater connectedness in general to more effectively monitor usage data and post-sale customer experiences. Some companies are even using predictive analytics to detect issues before they arise – enabling them to take action ahead of time to ensure the best customer experiences possible.

So, when it comes to Black Friday or any other kind of high-stakes shopping day for retailers or manufacturers, keep in mind that thankfulness pays. If you can create experiences that make life easier for your customers, you may very well be showered with thankfulness expressed by your customers with their ongoing business.

Happy Thanksgiving and good luck on Black Friday.

Be thankful for a free whitepaper from IDC about how to drive a great customer experience from design of new products, through to their operation at a customer.

Billy Porter Set To Make TV Directorial Debut With ‘Pose’ Season 3

Billy Porter Set To Make TV Directorial Debut With ‘Pose’ Season 3

Newly-minted Emmy winner Billy Porter can soon add another accomplishment to his resume: television director.

Porter is set to direct an episode of FX’s “Pose” during its third season, Variety has learned. No word yet on which episode Porter will be helming or when the episode will head into production.

Porter broke the news this week to Variety over a brief phone interview, which marked his first time speaking to the press after his historical Emmy win on Sunday night.

“I’ve been directing for 20 years in the theater, and I’m directing an episode of Season 3 myself,” Billy revealed to Variety. “I’m trying to be the head b-tch in charge, hunny!”

This past weekend at the 71st annual Emmy Awards, Porter won the Emmy for lead actor in a drama for his work on “Pose,” becoming the first-ever openly gay black man to win in the category. The trophy joins his already-impressive collection of accolades earned throughout a nearly three-decade career across Broadway, television and film, which has awarded him the Tony for best actor in a musical for “Kinky Boots” in 2013, and a Grammy for best musical theater album for “Kinky Boots” in 2014.

Porter had teased his plans to direct an episode of Pose,” during a 92Y discussion with “Pose” creator Ryan Murphy this past August, but the news had not officially been confirmed. “Billy is going to be directing, right?” Porter playfully asked Murphy during their conversation. “Yes, you are,” Murphy said, to which Porter quipped, “This is me reminding,” with Murphy responding, “You don’t have to remind me, Billy. I feel you.” Production sources have since confirmed that Porter is locked to direct an episode this coming season.

The critically-acclaimed show, which was honored with a Peabody award, is centered in New York City’s underground ballroom scene in the late ’80s and early ’90s, shining a light on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The series features the largest cast ever in television history of transgender actors in series regular roles ever, as well as the largest recurring cast of LGBTQ actors ever for a scripted series.

Porter joins a diverse roster of directors on “Pose,” including Janet Mock — who serves as a writer, director and producer on the series, and recently signed a groundbreaking overall deal at Netflix, which made her the first out transgender woman to have a sweeping creative deal at a major content company.

“Pose” was renewed for a third season earlier this summer, in the midst of its second season. No premiere date has been set for Season 3.

Google to expand AI-powered flood forecasts in India ahead of monsoon season

September 19, 2019   Big Data

Google is making an expansion of its flood prediction AI for regions in India for the coming monsoon season to cover more than 11,000 square kilometers in areas along the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, the company announced today. Approximately 20% of global flood fatalities occur in India.

Since the start of Flood Forecast initiative trials in the Patna region first began about a year ago, 800,000 notifications were sent to smartphone users. Alerts are also sent to a human network of volunteers with the nonprofit SEEDS to spread emergency warning news among people without phones.

The expansion will be supported by new forecast methodologies like a recently made approach to create Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) such as optimizing its inundation model to work with tensor processing units (TPU) and supply predictions 85 times faster than the use of CPUs alone.

“Correlating and aligning the images in large batches, we adjust their camera models (and simultaneously solve for a coarse terrain) to make the images mutually consistent. Then, we create a depth map for each image. To make the elevation map we optimally fuse the depth maps together at each location,” Google said in a blog post. “For additional efficiency improvements, we’re also looking at using machine learning to replace some of the physics-based algorithms, extending data-driven discretization to two-dimensional hydraulic models, so we can support even larger grids and cover even more people.”

In addition to use of TPUs, to continue to improve the accuracy of flood predictions, Google began to use imagery from European Space Agency Sentinel-1 satellite constellation.

In January, Google said flood predictions achieved 75% accuracy. Model prediction levels have remained the same, a company spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email.

Flood prediction systems could become increasingly important as climate change worsens. In other AI models to protect people and property from natural disasters, researchers this week published a paper on machine learning to predict large wildfires.
